I am new to MDing and have been reading the posts for the last two days. Very informative and entertaining. I was using one of those army fold up shovels to dig and now realize that was way overboard!! I have only been digging here on the farm so it's okay. They say there was an old town here and that our road was the main drag. Supposedly, across the road in the hay field was the grocery store. Does anyone know where I can find out for sure? I heard tell there is a web site but haven't been able to find anything.

Not really sure about your area, you might want to try this place and see if your area is listed. I use this place all the time, if its worth searching its here. http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=116:1:3045485827765143::NO::p1_COUNTY,P1_COUNTY_ALONG:n%2C

Welcome to the forum, and good luck hunting, make sure you post your finds so we can all see them. People around here are really nice, i just joined not to long ago myself. again good luck and have fun.

The chances of finding something like that online are slim. The best thing you can do is ask the people that live in the area. Or go to local library or historical center and try to find some old maps. It can be tough.
I have had about the same thing as you once. I got 3 different answers from 3 different nieghbors in an area about a store that used to be. Bottom line was ,there was a store there somewhere.
I found a old map at a historical center in my area. They met once a month and to be there when they were. The map showed a huge black smudge where the store was:rofl: It covered about a 3 block area and didn't help pinpoint it.
I never did figure out exactly where it was but found some nice coins looking. This was in a huge farm field, could only search at certain times so not to hurt the crop. If you can, search the field. Anything in the general area can be good.
Good Luck

BTW- Nothing wrong with a big shovel so long as you are on the farm.Definitly dont want to take it to the local park though.

Your local library should have some old maps or township records, a platte book of the county. How long ago? Talk to some of the oldest, sharp minded seniors in your town and see what they remeber.
