New to this. Tone ?

I just bought a new Discovery 2200 off e-bay. It is new in box. I used it today and once in a while i will get a single tone, usually iron/tone but sometimes a higher tone. But then when i go back over the spot nothing. I tried going over them from different angles and still nothing. Is it normal to get a single tone now and then when nothing is there? This is the first time i have ever used a MD so don't know anything at all about them except what i have read. I did find a number of screw off bottle caps, rusty iron, and the thing loves aluminum.BG and 2 newer pennies. I have figured out how to get fairly close pinpointing with it by making a cross over the target. Any help and advice to a complete beginner appreciated. Thanks.

Hi REBEL1, I'm sure one of the pro's will get back with you before long, I'm a beginner too using a Land star and some times I get a false signal too. I don't think it's that uncommon, I just sweep in different directions and slow my sweep down if I don't get a good signal I move on. Someone should chime in and tell you to maybe turn down your sensitivity or make some other types of adjustment. Don't get discouraged, just keep going out there, every time I do I learn a little more about my machine and the way it reads. I dig allot of trash and coins and now can pretty much tell when it's a coin.

Thanks for the reply. I figure i am going to need a lot more time with it to learn it well. But it is Fun.

Perhaps your sens. is set too high or your using a pendulum swing which is prevalent in newbies...a tip for pinpointing try it from two directions to better narrow down the target. With all units you may get an occasional audio sound caused by junk but it will be quick tone and a true target will give a longer tone.Just takes time and practice and if you can find a beach it will help a lot learning the tones and pinpointing as digging in sand is easy. Everyone thinks metal detecting is easy but to become proficient will take many hours in the field. Gosh I hope your using a good pair of headphones...and practice a smooth level swing and all will fall into place. Rome wasn't built in a day and your certainly not going to learn the hobby or any particuliar detector overnight..Reading the manual several times doesn't hurt either...

Thanks for the reply. I was on a beach of the river but there are a lot of small rocks there. I use a set of stereo headphones that i can adjust the volume on each side separately. I think i just need a lot more practice with it.

I too am new to this hobby and have an Elite 2200 which I think is the same as the Discovery 2200. I think that the unit is constantly adjusting itself for ground balance and if I lift the coil too far above the ground and then back down, it gets a tiny bit confused and emits a beep, then stabilizes and that is why sometimes the beeps cannot be repeated.
