Hi, Iam most impressed with this form, great information!
I looking to buy a detector for use in parks (Canberra) and on the beach (South Coast of New South Wales). So far Ive read my self into a spin! Looks like the Sovereign GT or Elite would be a good detector. Iam a bit confused by all of the messages it seems that there are at least three types of Sovereigns all called sov...? Can someone Please give a brief history - explanation and advise which would be best. Thanks Bill from Oz

The Sovereign which was first made back in the early 90s is called the original Sovereign, then in the middle 90s came the Sovereign XS, then in 1998 came the Sovereign XS2, then about 2001 came the Sovereign XS2a and in 2003 came the Sovereign Elite with the Sovereign GT came out in the fall of 2004. These are all different models of the same detector with some changes done to them. There is a web page that will tell you everything there is to know about the Sovereign if you want to check it out by Ken Wildherre at http://www.geocities.com/sovereignmods/index.html
I don't think he has the new GT there yet, but to me this one seem to be the more sensitive than the others and has a toggle switch so you can have silent search or a threshold without taking the detector apart to do the mod. Check out Kens site and if you have any question just ask as we have several well experienced people here that uses the Sovereigns.

its a good choice for land and is a killer beach machine with the exception of the control box not being waterproof .........I think the sovereign is a good choice,I am partial to the elite with the ex being my other baby.....if you havent owned a detector before then get a sov. ...I do see people have trouble learning the sovereign ....but it seems they are usually coming from another detector and the sov. is completely different than most ..........great machine that will take some learning and dedication but the rewards are well worth the time spent .........I say go for it ....come back and ask any questions you may encounter and enjoy the learning part its really quite fun........ ........good luck

hi bill ,
just wanted to put my 2 cents in.
these sovereign are fantastic detectors. i ve had a explorer xs for 5 years and i got to say i like my new GT more. if you go with the sovereign GT with its straight shaft and a few other options over the elite youll be happy not to say that the elite is better its just alittle more user friendly. read the manual go detecting read the manual alittl more then go detecting again and youll be surprised at how fast youll be able to get the hang of it and keep coming back to this form. its the best
