What factory program should a beginner use to learn.Coins or coin and jewelry seem to be my choice. Also is one of these two programs hotter or give more depth? I used the xlt for years so not a beginner to md but the v3i is new to me.

Good choice to help you learn. Throw some coins down along with some trash items like pulltabs, bottlecaps, nails, bobbypins and look and listen.
Run your sensitivity on the lower side to avoid falsing.
Welcome to the forum and be prepared to be amazed with the V3i.
It does take a while to learn but don't get discouraged......read everything you can ....starting here.

C/J program would be a good start, as for settings, you will need to set your recovery delay for your swing speed. You will do this by placing a coin on ether side of your coil adjust till you get both to hit in either direction. the other you will need to set your filter to the ground you are working. remember rx gain is not an issue you get depth with technology not horse power. I have pulled dimes at over 8" with a rx setting of 4. depending on your dirt coil selection will make the difference, dd coils dont get the job done in sand the 950 would be a good choice. if you are in trash and need separation a 4x6 would be a good choice ( this works great down fence lines).

The C&J program is my suggestion. The tones seem easier on the ears than Coin prog. Besides, if you do want to hope for a gold ring such as a mans wedding band or class ring, you'll want to hear those tones being audio-blocked in "Coin."

I run CJ 90% of the time, but I've set audio tones to zero which aren't near coin signals. I'll find gold by accident unless I'm searching for someone's lost gold ring.

Thanks for all the tips. Gonna be in the 70s here this weekend so just may try the advise out.
