First you need to learn how to correctly ground balance the detector. You will notice that in all metal the threshhold is not stable, but who uses all metal. However, you will put it in all metal when ground balancing.
Second I would turn the center knob all the way CCW, or to the left until it clicks, that puts you in VCO and that helps tell if a target is large or near the surface. Once you learn the VCO you will love it.
Third run that baby as hot as you can. I usually run mine at least 9 or higher on sensitivity. Turn it up until it starts to get unstable then back off just a hair.
Fourth you will love the discriminators. It is so easy to use, find a target with first discriminator, flick the toggle forward and your in second discriminator, if target is still there dig, but dig after pulling the toggle back so you can pinpoint, pinpointing is usually right on the money 90% of the time.
This is a deep easy to use machine. Mine talks to me, I can tell iron. That machine will let you know if the target is large iron, or a can because when you pull the loop away it will kind of make a kind of echoing sound and then fade away.
It won't take you long to learn and you will find deep targets, especially if you relic hunt. I find this machine extremely deep when the ground is very saturated, get muddy hands, but all of my deepest targets have been in sopping wet soil.
