New to the Sovereign GT

Southwind

Well-known member
I just received my new Sovereign GT and haven't even put it together yet. I've got 30+ years of detecting under my belt, currently own a Whites DFX and owned a Minelabs SE earlier this year. What would be you suggestions/tips for someone new to the Sovereign? I do mostly coin/jewelry hunting with the occasional relic hunting. This Sovereign GT has the add on number display(180 I believe).

Warnings/tips/suggestions?

I know for new users of the DFX I recommend loading the factory coin & jewelry and getting used to it before they start making adjustments. Is using the preset/dots a recommended start for new users? What kind of depth can I expect? We have a local park with very very deep targets that I have pretty much cleaned to the ability of my DFX and the SE, can I expect any production out of the Sovereign?

I got the Sovereign GT to mainly hit our local swimming holes and tot lots, but does it also make a good deep coin getter?

Thanks

I use a GT and love it! Hits real good on everything. I use a 8in. coin search coil and have found dimes down to 8 to 10 inches at the
beach in wet sand. Also have the 180 meter on it and well pleased with it also. To bad the coin search coil is not water proof but have other
coils and other detectors for in the water. It has it's own song to sing to you so take time to learn it and you will love it like the rest of us
who use it. Good luck and good hunting.

Best settings:

Disc at Zero, notch at Zero (unless you want to eliminate gold rings, of course)

Sensitivity at 12 noon...best stability and depth.

Toggles: Disc, Fixed, Threshold, Band1

Threshold adjustment: Slight buzz

Volume: cranked up to about 3/4's or higher.

Listen for the targets you almost missed by sensing changes and nulls in the threshold. Go back for a closer look and get a good read off of it with a tighter and closer swing...if it has a good repeatable signal, dig it.

Get to know the tones...do tests on a blanket out in a clean spot in the yard, in Auto sensistivity...put everything you have out there as far as jewelry...get smart. Do coins and trash too. Practice pinpointing. Put it back at 12 noon and go hunt.

That's it...you know everything there is to know. :)

First thing is you mentioned is band 1, does it work better for you? I find band 2 works the best for us and give a more accurate meter reading if using a meter. Second thing is why run disc and locked as the switch is not active in disc and only when in all metal so I keep mine on pinpoint so when I go to all metal it is in pinpoint so I can pinpoint the targets. I also would recommend the volume at max and adjust your headphone for proper volume for you hearing as the volume control on any Sovereign is for the target volume, not threshold volume. This is what Minelab recommends and the way I have used mine since 1996 and feel I do very good on depth.
Other than that I agree with everything else you posted.

Sometimes sensitivity at 12 oclock gives a solid null even going slow. Is it better to reduce it or hunt with it in null? Lots of trash in those spots.

Well my first day out was interesting. First I will say the Sovereign GT is very sensitive and deep. I dug 2 separate nickles in a tot lot at a good 12". They were both at the very bottom of the wood chips. Pretty impressive. I can't wait ti go back and hunt my local tot lots at my own pace. I was with 2 hunting buddies who use a DFX and a Eagle Spectrum who move very fast. I know I must hunt must slower than them to get that stuff they're missing.

I think the Sovereign GT will be a great addition to my arsenal. My DFX for coin shooting and the GT for tot lots, swimming holes and relics. I get the feeling the GT will be an awesome relic detector. I dug several large iron relics as deep as 20" in 2 different local school playgrounds.

Yeah, as for band 1/band2 I agree...not sure why I said that, other than that when I hunt around an Excal I think it has less interference that way. I agree that band 2 is better with a meter, like on nickels for example. But I never use a meter at the beach and that's where I've been using the GT lately.

As for the fixed/PP, I also never use pinpoint and rarely use All Metal. But in your scenario that makes sense too.

If it's solidly nulling due to the ground mineralization the only things you can do is run it a little lower on the sens, swing it slower, or live with it. If it's nulling because you have some discrimination dialed in, I say run it with none, listen to it all, and dig what sounds good. You get used to hunting with everything accepted after a while and there's no nulling.

It's a great machine, and if I'm not mistaked that white meter is a 180 meter.
Run zero DISC and no Notch. Turn the sens adj fully CCW untill it clicks into Auto for starts.
I'd dig all targets to start with untill you learn the quirks in the sound that trash makes.
Swing slow and overlap the swings; very important.

Good luck and if you happen to be in Kansas, I hear the GT rules.

With discrimination at zero it will still null on iron. I haven't tried with iron mask off . I may try that next time and see. I've dug some broken pieces of cast iron in that spot. But I also found a silver coin that I had walked over with my explorer and tejon

The way I understand it is with the iron mask off it will null even more as that is why they say in the owners manual when it is on it may false more on iron, but will hear coins close to iron. With it off it will not false as much, but miss coins close to iron. The way I look at that is with it off it will null even more. What Mike says on the sensitivity is correct as it just sees too much of the iron causing it to null and miss the good coins in with the iron. Also when I run ito this in iron I will go a lot slower yet so it give a chance to see the good targets in with the iron, too fast and it can not respond to any good target. One other thing is getting a smaller coil so it dont see as much of the iron at one time so it has a chance to see a good target in with trash.

aren't the other soverigns always in iron mask but will pick up the iron in all-metal. i've never used the g.t. but wouldn't it give a signal on the iron with the iron mask off instead of nulling.

The original Sovereign and the GT are the only 2 that you can turn the iron mask off. The way I understand it the Sovereign are made to hate iron in disc, but in all metal you can get a signal on iron. I also understand that with the iron mask on it will false a bit from iron as we are seeing and more so with the GT as it is more sensitive , but it will also see a coin next to small iron. Now off it will not false on iron as much as it will null and you will not get a coin close to iron, so it will null more off than when it is on. This is the info that is in the owners manual for the GT.

Hello,

My english is not so god and I have to ask you :

12 noon means that the sensitivity is in the middle ?

Track/Fix/p.point switch is wotking only in All metals mode?

Thank you.

Hey Pil, 12 noon means that the white line on the knob is pointing straight up, just like on a clock,at the number 12. Another tip for you. If you have some question's, you would get a better response by starting a new thread rather than ask on an old thread, that nobody is looking at anymore. It isn't that we're ignoring you it's just because most people haven't seen your question's.
Good luck hunting, Gary
