New to the Mxt Pro ....

Hi guys , I am new to the Mxt Pro and should be getting it by the end of the week . I was wondering which coil may have better separation in a lite trashy area ? A 8x6 sef or the 6x10 whites coil ? I have the sef for my V3i , but I do not have the whites 6x10 . Thanks for any info. GS

Do you have the 12", 950 or 9" spider Concentric coils at this time?

My favorite coil for more open areas with sparse trash is the 9" spider Concentric coil. A "light trashy area" is really a matter of individual description, but I am usually in very trashy to mildly trashy environments and, for me, my favorite coil for the MXT All-Pro is the 6½" Concentric (that's the 5.3 Eclipse labeled coil). I have hunted with all of the Double-D coils you mentioned, and more, both elliptically shaped and round, and the all-around best performing coil in a variety of trashy sites is the 6½" Concentric.

If you already have the SEF, why not add a great smaller Concentric coil to complement it?

Albeit i dont own a MXT but i do own a DFX and all of those coils that you have mentioned,my favourite out of those for years had been the 10x6 as i found it to be a very good all round coil that done a reasonable good job on most ground conditions, the SEF8x6 coil replaced it as i was finding that it was struggling with the weight of the 10x6 coil as i do have a back problem,i found with the SEF that it nearly gave the same performance but lighter.I bought the 5.3 or6'' Concentric years ago and the plan was just using it when the stubble came off,but it sat in the cupboard for a few years till the back end of last year, the coil was added to the detector specially to try out on a very junky/trashy site and i found that it was that good its not really been off in months.

Never really was into concentric coils before but in the last 6 months i would say that most of my detector have been changed over to them, must admit i wish i had changed over using one full time years ago, most of my permissions are very old trashy roman/saxon and celtic sites and i am finding that Concentric coils suit me better especially when using a smaller coil and when used slowly and methodically you can pull out some very nice finds from between the trash.

For wide open spaces i tend to use the 12'' Hotshot concentric coil as well, its a very light coil for its size but alas no longer made.

Of course what may suit my style or detecting conditions may not suit others.

If you already have the 8x6 SEF for the V ( which will then also work on the MXT and it's a GREAT coil), get the small Whites concentric.

Congrats on your new purchase. You're going to love that MXT Pro! There's so many coils that are top notch for hunting. I tend to go to my stock coil 9.5 or else my little 5.3. I'm thinking this year I'll be playing around with my other coils and do some housecleaning. HH, Nancy

Thanks to all. The MXT will be coming with the 950 conc. coil and the 5.3 conc. coil. I already have the D2 10", 8x6 sef , 5.3 conc.,6" excel and the little 4x6 . I think I'm set for now. GS

Yes, sounds like you'll be set to go when you get it. Now if the weather would cooperate. HH, Nandy

Of the two coils that you mention, I would take the 8x6 SEF over the 6x10. However, If i had a choice of coils and wanted to stay in that size range, without a doubt I would mount the 9" spider coil.

Is the 9" spider basically the same as the 950 ? Both are conc. ? Thanks GS

They may differ in the number of turns in the windings or in the ratio of diameter between the transmit and receive coils or in other ways I haven't thought of.

This is a good question. Is there any performance difference between the two coils? My MXT ALL-Pro came with the 950 concentric coil but a few people here all like the 9" spider coil. Why do people like the 9" spider over the 950 concentric?

The main difference that I like about the 9" spider over the 950 is that the rod attaches closer in towards the center of the coil and not out on the edge like the 950's Coil balances much better and doesn't always want to try and tip forward.

In light trash areas such as you ask about and the fact you ask specifically about the SEF 6X8 coil compared to the White's 6X10 coil.

Myself out of the two coils you mentioned I prefer the SEF 6X8 over the White's 6X10. I have had really good performance and luck with the SEF 6X8 coil on the White's M6 & MXT detectors. The SEF 6X8 coil will see coins under a highly mineralized brick that the White's 6X10 does not see in testing. This test made a believer out of me concerning the performance abilities of the SEF 6X8 coil in a more mineralized ground condition. The SEF 6X8 also performs very well in non mineralized ground conditions and slices through trash nicely.

Basically? ... Yes.

Both Concentric design? ... Yes.

I heard someone at White's say they were in essence the same search coil, but without opening them up I can't measure the actual physical diameters of the Tx and Rx windings, but in-the-field they generally tend to perform quite similarly.

The differences? The 950 is a measures, physically, a bit over 9½" in diameter and the 9" spider coil is just a slight amount over 9" in diameter. The 9" coil is a 'spider' design, that is more open. Personally, I have grown tired of the early thin 950 and newer UFO shaped 950 coils, but I prefer smaller-sized coils anyway.

However, the 9" 'spider' coil does have a slightly smaller look about it and I find it to be a more durable looking and attractive search coil. Best of all, the 9" 'spider' has the rod mount point a little closer to the center of the coil and that helps give it a much better 'feel' and it is less likely to flop around or get bumped out of your desired position.

While it is 'basically' the same as the 950, I like using the 9" spider coil more, and in some moderate trashy sites it just seems to handle or work a little better than the 950 so, perhaps, is is just slightly smaller in internal winding diameter? Not sure, but I know it was a 'must have' coil in my arsenal after it came out and I used it twice. All of my 950 coils are gone with the exception of the one for my XLT that's sitting on shelf somewhere.
