If you take a look up in the FAQFAQ section, you'll find an article I wrote a few years ago about coinhunting with the X-Terra 70. http://www.findmall.com/read.php?55,497015,497015#msg-497015 Basically, the priniciples are the same for the 705, with a few additional features. You now have tracking offset for those who like to put their detector in auto track with an option to run it a bit positive or negative. Instead of having to use Prospecting mode for precision pinpointing, 705 users can use sizing pinpoint and monitor the TID while pinpointing and sizing up the target. Setting up the X-Terra will vary with the type of targets you are looking for. With the notch discrimination functionality of the X-705, you have the option of setting a Pattern to accept the targets you want to "sound off" and reject the targets you want to ignore. According to your IP address, you are located in the UK. If you are after some of those old hammered silver coins, the TID will be a lower number than the US coins that I hunt for. So the best advice I could give you for knowing the ID of your prospective targets would be to wave some of them under your coil and see where they register. If you don't have any, make a trip to the local coin shop and purchase a few. Or better yet, take your detector with you and see if the shop owner will let you pass them under your coil.
One of the best tools I could recommend would be to build a test garden in your yard. Clear a spot completely of all metal by using the all metal mode and digging up everything. Once the area is clear, bury some coins, jewelry and even some trash that you're likely to find on a real hunt. Bury the targets at varying depths. And place a piece of trash within a couple inches of a few of the targets. One other thing before you get started building the test plot is to map it out on paper as you go. This "cheat sheet" will accelerate your learning the sounds and TID numbers. Practice different settings, try out all the tones and try different levels of discrimination. After spending time in your test plot, learning how different target(s) respond to various sweep speeds, you'll be better prepared to take on the rest of your yard. Then your neighbors yard, then the local parks etc. etc. etc. If you have any specific questions, don't hesitate to ask. There are some UK folks on this forum who would be better able to answer your questions regarding the TID of coins in your part of the World. But there are a lot of folks on here, from around the World, who will help you learn and better understand your X-Terra. HH Randy
