New to the hobby!

First learn propper digging methods. More parks are closed to detecting due to shovels being used. A small garden trowel and a screwdriver is good to start. Always dig straight down with as small of a dirt plug removed as possible. This lets the grass roots to recover. If a video came with the detector please view it. Skill comes with practice. Are you local to Peoria? Our club members would be happy to show you how to use your detector, retrieve targets and just have fun.

Hi Brian and welcome to the forum. Talk about a day late.....:ranting:.. we just had our monthly meeting tonight, we meet the last Wednesday of the month, maybe we will get to meet you at the next meeting August 28th which will be a potluck get together.

There is a lot of information on the Internet if you have not found it yet on how to use your new detector which will help you get started. I would suggest waving known good targets like different coins and rings as well as some not so desirable targets like various pull tabs and pop tops over your coil to learn what a good target looks and sounds like. Another way to start learning is to hunt some playgrounds where the digging is easy and you usually have a good assortment of good and bad targets there as well. Dig all targets at first paying attention to the sound as well as the display and you will quickly pick up on what you will want to dig and not dig in the future.

Good luck and stay tuned for some more good ideas......... it's my bedtime......:goodnight:

You need to use a set of headphones or earbuds, so you don't bother others within earshot. Radio Shack sells a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter, if you should need one. they run a couple dollars. You can always bury some coins in a flower or veggie garden if you have one. Or on the edge of a corn field if you know a farmer. If you go to a playground try to get there early early, so the little kiddos don't swamp you with questions. The Tracker IV uses a meter instead of a digital display. You will learn that most coins sound off with the same tone. Nickels will probably be an exception to that.

Thank you everyone for all the advice. I hope to make the next meeting. I plan on going out trying the new detector out this weekend. If I find anything I will post the pictures.

Hi Brian, Welcome to the forum and to the world of metal detecting. Like Larry said, we just had our monthly meeting last night, Oh, what great displays of finds. We would love for you to join in on the fun. Hope to see you at the next meeting/potluck. Bring a friend if you want. We're a very friendly bunch of people and we all enjoy the hobby.
