New to the Hobby with an Eagle Spectrum

My 14 year old wanted to try metal detecting so we searched the classifieds and found an Eagle Spectrum. We are both new to this but we are having a lot of fun. He searches I dig and then we switch. Mostly finding clad and we have high hopes of finding some silver. We have been searching an old boy scout camp but have been turning up only clad. We have been using the pre-set coin and jewelry setting. Is this good for now or should we be trying something else? Thanks for any help!

Hi i use the eagle spectrum with good results. The best thing to do is read the manual till its understood and try goggling eagle spectrum programs even xlt programs are easly adapted for the spectrum, good luck regards mark

The coin and jewelry program is a good one to learn the machine with.
Spend time with that one till you're ready to modify it and use the other ones.

HIGH THUNTINGFOOLS, I TOTALLY AGREE WITH MK02 READ THE MANUAL OVER SEVERAL TIMES. I WOULD ALSO SUGGEST YOU JOIN A TREASURE CLUB BECAUSE THERE ARE A LOT OF BENIFITS IN NETWORKING WITH A GROUP AND OPERTUNITIES TO EXPERIENCE DIFFIERENT TYPES OF TREASURE HUNTING, RELIC,CASH HUNTING,WATER ETC. AND MOST CLUBS HAVE DRAWINGS FOR 50-50, SILVER AND GOLD COINS ETC.BUT THE REAL TREASURE ARE THE LIFE LONG FRIENDS YOU WILL MEET NOT JUST IN A CLUB, BUT LANDOWNERS WHO ALLOW YOU TO HUNT THEIR PROPERTY. I WOULD ALSO SUGGEST YOU SUBSCRIB TO TREASURE MAG'S LOST TREASURE( WIN A NEW METAL DETECTOR AND/OR WESTERN AND EASTERN TREASURE MAG. A LOT OF CLUB MEMBERS WILL BRING IN OLD MAG. FOR THERE LIBRARY FOR ALL MEMBERS TO READ AND RETURN. MY FAVORITE BOOK IS TREASURE HUNTER # 7, ANY BOOKS BY H.GLENN CARSON AND CHARLES GARRETT WILL PUT YOU ON THE FAST TRACK TO RECOVERING TREASURE. USE YOUR LIBRARY AND LOCAL GOVENMENT OFFICES FOR THE FREE RESEARCH MATERIALS AND LASTLY FOR NOW FIRST BE PATIENCE AND THINK POSITIVE,RECORD YOUR FINDS TAKE PITURES AND SEND IN A STORY TO A TREASURE MAG. FOR MONEY( WE DONT' READ MANY ARTICLES FROM TEEN AGERS, RIGHT GANG.?) WHEN DETECTING SWING YOUR DETECTOR SLOW AND KEEP THE HEAD CLOSE TO THE GROUND.WHEN YOU GET ENOUGH MONEY BUY A GARRETT COIN PROB IT WILL SAVE A LOT OF DIG TIME. I KNOW THERE ARE OTHER GUYS OUT THERE WHOM WILL HELP YOU WITH TIPS ALSO RIGHT GUYS?? IS THE SOME ONE WHO CAN TELL THIS YOUNG MAN SOME SOURCES TO FIND A CLUB NEAR HIM?? COLLECT YOUR JUNK AND PULL TABS AND TEST YOUR MACHINE TO SEE WHERE IT READS ON THE PROGRAMS AND RINGS AND COINS TOO. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE A BLESSED EVERY DAY. THE CHIPMUNK.

Not a bad choice for a first detector. Some suggestions:
- Buy a set of White's Royal GT headphones. They work well, are fairly light, and have a very long cord.
- Go to Radio Shack and get a headphone splitter. This will allow you to both listen to the targets at the same time while one swings and the other digs. Let the digger wear the Royals, since he will be moving around more.
- Boy scout camps are great to hunt, I've pulled lots of silver out of them. Look for the camping area. Not the cabins, but the tent area. There was always a fire that was gathered 'round. Start at the fire pit and spiral outward.
- Look for water spigots near the camping area. Scouts formed lines to get water, and kids in line are fidgety. Fidgety kids drop stuff!
- Look for an assembly area and search the path you would have walked between the camping area and the assembly area.

All areas are likely to produce. These areas will produce more.

Unlike the Spectrum XLT and DFX, the Eagle Spectrum presets are fairly hot out of the box. You can still tweak them up a bit for more depth, though. Read the manual thoroughly to gain an understanding of how the various settings work and increase them incrementally. A good ground balance is key. Without that, the hottest settings in the world are ineffective.

When you decide to move to a newer detector, I suggest an M6 or MXT. Their higher frequency will allow you to hunt together with minimal mutual interference.

Have fun!

Thanks for joining us Chipmonk, you make many good points with good advice for the beginner. I might suggest you turn your Cap lock off. As you can see, it makes reading very hard on the eyes, especially old ones........

You've discovered something that your 14 yr old son actually WANTS to do with you ?...relax, you've already discovered something a lot harder to find than silver. Seriously though, congrats on the "treasure" you've already discovered. Sounds like you two are prime candidates to join the ranks of the addicted. Lots of good advice already and as a4wdguy suggested, I'd look into an M6 or MXT for one or both of you as soon as you realize you BOTH need a detector...which will be very soon. Be sure and post some pics of your finds. Welcome and good luck...

The Eagle Spectrum is a great Whites detector. Very close in functionality to the XLT. Remember though, if you enter any program changes and the battery goes dead or you remove the battery for too long a time period that those program changes will disappear. That is because the Eagle Spectrum has volatile memory. The XLT,DFX and V3i do not lose programming with battery removed.

Deepest find I ever made was with my trusty Eagle Sectrum. Mercury dime at 13 measured inches in ideal low mineralization soil conditions.
VDI was sketchy but good enough to make me dig. You'll quickly be able to do the same.

Goat Rancher who posts in the V3i section uses cordless after-market earphones on his V3i and I see no reason they would not work for you on the Eagle S. if of any interest.
The suggestion of the dual phone cord fitting is a great tool for teaching.Factory programs are great, I have tweaked ones I could e-mail to you if interested.

Welcome to this fine hobby and congrats on the excellant selection of the Eagle Spectrum.

Jack, aka corvair Keep swingin:detecting:

Preset programs are a good starting point but basically are weak programs....after you get the hang of it tweaking the relic program for your area should give you excellent depth....

A good friend runs that same box and he does very very well. Excellent find and you and your son have some fun times ahead! Welcome!!

I found a couple programs for the eagle spectrum. They might be good?
