New to the hobby. Few questions underwater

Hello,

I just started metal detecting at the start of September. I started off with that 720 underwater pinpointer, and have since purchased the Excalibur 2 with a land and sea pinpointer. Does anyone have any advice or had any issues with finding things in disc. mode when there is a of junk iron around the object, or if it is on edge? I seem to hit an area hard to the point where I no longer get targets in disc. mode. I then have been going back through in pinpoint mode grabbing up some of the iron, and out of the blue I have random rather large targets in disc. mode. There stuff is maybe 4-6" from the surface, so its not like I am removing overburden to expose new targets. Any tips or tricks to understanding this better so that I can hone in on things?

Thanks
Patrick

My advice is continue what your doing and learn as you go. Every beach is different so like a maze it takes time learn each spot and it's habits.

I hunt in PP and toggle to disc to check targets, as I go I will remove the bigger targets and check around the hole. IN this video I may check out 7 different targets. Until I get a good signal. And remember I have the switch on my handle where I can toggle between ..almetal/pp ...then to discriminate for a quick check then back to am/pp. I can single out each target, check...then decide if I should dig or not. Targets were not deep since I was in a good cut, dark sand and shells is the bottom you look for at this spot.

Thank you for the advice. I'll try that in the lake tomorrow. When you get a broken signal in disc. Is that because iron is masking the signal? The bottom here is muck central. At one point in time someone lost a 2ct. Gold ring off this particular dock. I figured such a thing would be much easier to find haha. Then again I've pulled 3 gallons of iron from the area this thing went in 35 years ago. So maybe the high iron is what is the issue. Like I said. I've been detecting for all of a month. A week with the excal. There has certainly been a learning curve thus far. Found some neat things though dating between 1870-1910ish.

I've only been detecting the water for 10 years now, each trip out I learn................

It can be a few things, iron masking a good target...like you said. Some crab pot pieces will give you that hint of a good target, then you dig again and it nulls. You just have to dig away and see whats up...a sifter really helps if the water is calm...many times I will get multiple targets, good and bad in the sifter.

That's great on the date late 1800's to early 1910. One thing I've always found, hunt a spot with history......you dig brass, or silver coins there will be gold in the mix.

Good Luck and let us know how you do! Also what state are you in?

I'm in Ballston lake NY. I would post pictures of the finds thus far but trying to figure out how to downgrade photos taken with my phone isn't working out for someone as technically illiterate as myself. Found a once silver plated cufflink with a tigers eye in it. A 925 ring maybe from the 20s. Solid brass 10 gauge shotgun shell from the 1870s. Found a vintage toy gun carcus today. I've been putting in 5 hours a day for a few weeks. My friends are starting to worry hahaha.

Fresh water will have a LOT more trash than salt water simple because stuff gets pushed around and desolves faster. The Xcal has a slow recovery.. PP mode is much faster with almost no recovery time. You might consider switch to another machine......... tiger shark, Nox, or AT Pro. Ive seen things as small as a paper clip have to be removed before your detector can SEE whats down there. Swapping to a small coil helps as well. Otherwise..... like Joe said you need to be willing to WORK and area and remove some trash causing the nulls.

Your photos are to large to down load...... move them to your computer and use a program like PAINT to RESIZE them smaller.

Thanks for the advice. I'll stick with what I've got, just looking for better understanding as to how it functions in a trash heavy environment. So what youve said has been great. I'll adjust my technique around the dock there. Headed to a spot on the lake that was a resort from 1902-27. Will adjust photos and display later. Cheers

Or, send the photos to your phone. Then email them back to yourself. My phone aks what kB size I want to use for mailing them. I pick the smallest size then send then to myself. Then I can use them to upload on the forum.

I think that’s why most of us do it. The quest. Keep at it. It’s a numbers game, eventually it’s gonna happen. Thanks for the pics.

Try an Equinox, I'm finding good signals completely surrounded by iron

I think I will try to find a friend who has one local haha. I have been pulling all the iron, there are not any good targets in that spot in pinpoint coming though anymore. Maybe it's not there or it's real deep. Either way I live here so I have many more years I can pound that spot. What's your opinion on the AT max? asking for a friend whos been into metal detecting for 17 years but never got into the water.

Thanks
Patrick
