Hey everyone, I'm new to the hobby. I've inherited a treasure ace 300, is this a decent detector, or do I need to find another one. I'm going to the gulf coast in july for vacation and I'm going to take it with me and try it out. Any tips would be terrific. This hobby looks like fun.

I would use what you have. Then upgrade later if needed. I'm not familiar with the 300. I would say only to reduce the sensitivity and increase the discrimination a little in the wet. I would set the disc to just reject a nail and increase the sensitivity and dig the rest in the dry sand. A sand scoop will save you some time too. Get ready for some GOLD!!!!!!

here is where you can get the manual free online

the detector is selling for about 179 dollars new

hope this helps

300 is a good machine to start with . Although I've seen on past post that the ace 250 is the more advance model to it.:garrett:

Welcome to the hobby!!! I say use it!!!!:detecting:

It's not a bad machine. I field tested it for Garrett many years ago when it first came out. Garrett no longer makes it for sale under their name but under a "private label" agreement with Kellyco where it as sold as the Predator. It's okay for a starter but you may want to upgrade later. Enjoy.

I say go with it. Oldrivers provided a link to a simple operating guide. Keep your disc low, know saltwater is conductive, and run the sensitivity high without falsing. Dig everything at first, just to verify the readouts. You never know, sometimes all those components co-operate to provide a great detector. Give it an open mind and a good chance to find targets afield.

I used a Whites coin master 5000 for many years and did well with it, I'm sure the 300 is much better. A couple of good finds and you'll be able to upgrade if needed. Happy Hunting.
