I'd like to get started in metal detecting. Can anyone tell me what would be a good machine to start of using?

State your budget limit if there is one, the type of detecting you are interested in. Then you need to determine if you want a display screen or not.
Spent some time reading various areas on the forum. Get a little idea what might interest you, then ask questions to start refining some clarification.
If you have a metal detecting club in your area, you can gain experience from users of different detector brands and types.

Be prepared to get various answers. Lots of good experience here on a good forum, and finding this forum is a nice start.

Actually, a Tosoro Compadre would probably fit the bill, also. They can be found new on E-bay for around $150.00.....cheap. Only one knob, simple to operate, excellant. Go to Treasure Hunters Forum, Tesoro, and watch what Tabdog does with his. A real education. Good luck.

Tab-nabit is spot on.Do a bit of research first and don't rush into anything. There are so many machines out there it can be quite confusing to choose. The good news is that most detectors from the major manufacturers(even the budget ranges) are capable of finding the goods.Good luck with whatever you choose.

BEWARE! - This hobby can become very addicting. As mentioned, don't be in too big a hurry to make up your mind. Learn all you can before deciding and remember that often you can buy a used up-scale machine for the price of a new lesser one.
