Hi Guys

We just joined this forum after a little "misadventure" this past weekend. My girlfriend was washing her hair in the lake and lost some jewelry in the process, which put a quite the little damper on the weekend. So, Sunday we hit Canadian Tire, bought a $150 metal detector along with some duct tape and x-large clear recycling bags and home-built an under water detector.

We knew withing about 50 square feet where one piece was in 4-5 feet of water...and we found it ! ;-)

The downside is the more sentimental piece is a little deeper (we think) and in a bed of weeds which is just a little too difficult of a job for my quick-and-dirty water proofing job. What I am thinking now is separate the head unit from the body of the detector, lengthen the wire to about 40 or 50 feet, and do a proper job of encasing them, with the head being on a short handle for bottom use, and the receiver floating in a sealed tupperware.

Anybody tried something along these lines, and how did it work ?....or conversely, would there be anybody in the Bobcaygeon Ontario area willing to rent us a proper underwater unit. (Who knows, this may even turn into a permanent hobby for us ;-) )

Thanks
Mike

I hope you meant 40 or 50 inches! Even so, I don't think it would be worth the effort. You may want contact the nearest dive shop and see if they know of someone with an underwater detector that would be willing to come out for gas money and a reward (if it's found). There is also a website called The Ring Finder. They have listings of folks that try to find your lost jewelry for a small fee and may have someone in that area

Joe.

i just Googled the ringfinders and there are 3 listed in Ontario. They are in London, Ottowa, and Sarnia. Might be somebody there close to you. jim

I will be traveling to Owen Sound within a month. Your 150 miles away from there. If no luck before that you can send me a private message. I have all the equipment to find your items. Might be a nice way to see some more spots.

Thanks, I checked out ring finder last night and have messages left for the guy in London.

Kind Regards, Marcie

Dear Scubadetector,

We are working on other options, but if we dont find it this weekend, I will definately be in contact with you.

Kind Regards, Marcie

Hi to all,

Thought I would just let everyone know that Dave Pommer from Ring Finders was able to locate my ring yesterday. I cant tell you how truly happy I am to have it back.

Dave was wonderful and I cant believe it, but he located the ring in about 4 feet of water with a storm blowing all around us in about 45 minutes.

I am truly grateful for everyone's advise and mostly to Dave for helping me out so.

I hope you all have a wonderful day.

Kind Regards,
Marcie

Scuba is the man!

Ringfinders seems to be an upfront bunch of folks really helping others. They do accept a reward and all sort of run their own business that way...but it's mostly for the fun of the hunt and recovery. You can read the bios on them and almost all state that a percentage of any reward goes to the charity of their choice. Steve and Toni on this forum joined that group. You won't find folks any more respectable than they. jim
