New to the Forum and New to Garrett.

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum and I'm also new to the "Garrett" society having just bought the GTI 2500 from our forum member, KCK.
I haven't taken delivery of it as yet, it's on it's way to Australia (Where I live) so I'm keeping everything crossed that the combined Postal Services of our two countries do the right thing and get it to me safely by about the middle of next week.

I like to watch the forums and I occassionly contribute If I have something I feel is worthwhile, so for a while until I not only get the machine and also get some experience under my belt, my main contibutions will only be reading comments from others and throwing in the odd question or two.

I am totally unfamiliar with anything Garrett, but I do have a little experience with Minelab Gold detectors, I own a Minelab GPX 4000 and previously had a Minelab GP Extreme for a couple of years and I want to find out and learn about coin hunting and what else goes along with it.
I have a Bounty Hunter Tracker 4 and after using the Minelab machines over the last 2 or 3 years I found it's not up to my expectations, hence I've gone for the Garrett.

I'll start the ball rolling with my first question, - Where is the best place to read up and learn (Other than on this great forum) about the "Nuts and Bolts" of the GTI 2500. I've already done quite a lot of reading on this forum and I'm running out of things to read on here, I'm looking for "Hints and Tips plus Do's and Dont's" type information. As I have said, I don't know anything about any Garrett machine so I'm eager to learn and I will appreciate any advice and help that anyone can throw at me.

I've come to the "States" to buy a machine because, because unless I'm mistaken, there is not too much info or availability, especially of used Garrett GTI 2500 machines here in Australia. A friend of mine over here, has a GTI 1500 which I was quite impressed with when I saw it in action and after quite a bit of research I decided to go for the 2500. So thats where I'm at, so I hope some of you can sympathize with me and help me out.

Looking forward to some help and advice,

Regards, Barry.

Welcome to the Garrett family Barry  Your 2500 will make you very happy and find alot of coins. As for information on it or tips n hints, you could email Mary at Garrett and ask for a copy of the Video for the 2500. That should answer alot of your questions. Then there is always the good ol Trial N Error way. But prolly the best way to get info on it is to ask here in the forum. The only stupid question is the one that isnt asked lol.

Take care and good luck

Steve

Hi Limpy, there could only be one limpy I know and I reckon its you,I am a proud owner of a 2500 which arrived last week from the states.Im still getting my head around it and its not a difficult detector to use,I suggest you go to the garrett home web site and down load the instuction manual, its all there and it helped me lots before I got my new detector,I wont ad much more only that you are going to have lots of fun,It is truely an amazeing machine,my finds so far for 3 hours learning is 5 old chiness coins,a old brass keg tap and a belt buckle ,it is going to be interesting to see how it performs on the gold feilds with the mineralization Barry :ausflag:

G'day Bazz,
Well what a small world???? Fancy running into you on here via the other side of the world????? Seems like I'm not the only one from not only Australia but from a common background with the same train of thought???? I noticed a post somewhere last night when I was browsing and thought "No that couldn't be the same "Tigermoth" - not on here!!!" It was eh? I 'll have to email you to get some hints from you now seeing that you have more experience than I do with this machine, he he. I've done quite a bit of research and reading and now that I've made the plunge, I'm glad and chuffed to know that someone else who I know and with the same christian name, from the same state in Australia has also made the same decision. Makes me feel like I'm on the right track.

Barry, I'll catch up with you soon.

Regards, Barry.

it is a VLF machine and won't do as well as a PI machine (Garrett Infinium LS or Minelab high end series) in the Outback. If you would decide to take it there you should get a DD coil which will help but not greatly. Where I live in the "States" we have sweet soil but it is clay and unless it was buried or the ground disturbed nothing is deep. 30 miles from here is an are that in the 1800's was known as the "Great Black Swamp". I went there with a friend and he found a pull-tab at a measured 7" about 17.8cm. We thought that if something that modern was that deep anything older would require a backhoe to retrieve. John and Uncle Willy are very knowledgable and there is a Garrett dealer in OZ.

G'Day Bazz X 2,
so you both went out and bought one each ! Nice. The GTI's now have mods in them to handle the high mineralization over here so they should perform well on the goldfields relic sites and other places. You should have fun with them both. Barry, you gunna keep the 250 ?

Chris.

One place to go : losttreasure.com and click on field tests, then Garrett Electronics, and read the field tests on the 2500. I have a field test on it but it's in Gold & Treasure Hunting Magazine.

THe new chip Garrett recently installed in the 2500 is specifically for the Australian soil and gold fields and at the request of the folks down under.

Bill

Yeah that chip was installed at the request of the folks from the Land of Oz. Glad to see an Aussie group gathering here. Helps to round out this very diverse forum. How you been doing Chris? Made any great finds lately?

Bill

Hi Chris, could never sell the 250,as you no its a gem,and has a huge part in our hobby, the 2500 takes us one step further as it proved today on a flogged out bit of ground,my first aus halph penny 1934 with the 2500.bits of a fob watch and a old brass flip cigeret lighter, and this is all in learning mode.Limpy it would be good to catch up and if I can help with any thing just hollar but remember im still GREEN but thanks to people on this forum we can only improve.Bazz :beers:

Welcome to the forum Barry.
Good luck with the GTI. I look forward to to see how you go with it. It's good to see a few more of them used in Oz.
All the best.
Mick Evans.

Hi again to everyone,

Thanks to Steve, Bill, Paul, Chris and Barry for your help and advice that you have offered. It's great to be welcomed like this and I'm looking forward to any more advice that is offered.

I'm looking forward to the Posties delivery van arriving during the week so I can get some hands on feel of the machine. I gather that if I intend to use it as part of my gold detecting armory, the suggestions are that I'll have to get that mineralization combating chip fitted. That will be the next challenge to find someone and somewhere that is willing to do that for me without sending in back to USA.

I have downloaded the operators manual, but I find it hard to read something and understand how to use the information without having the machine to apply that knowledge on to. So I suppose I'd better be patient and wait till it gets here.

Thanks again for all of the help and advice and if anyone else has any more. please pass it on.

Regards, Barry

Is a great place to buy a Garrett Machine. Mr Garrett has put together a great video on the 2500 GTI and it will have you up and running in a very short time. It will show you about each of the controls and allot of the does and don'ts of the machine. It is first rate and worth the $9.95 investment (American funds plus shipping and handling)
If you need this DVD I can get it for you.
