Hey guys, I just purchased a CZ-5. I have always been a Garrett guy, started out on a 350, then picked up a 250, and eventually an AT Pro. I thought the AT was all that until I went detecting with a buddy from Florida. He let me use his CZ-5, and I instantly fell in love with the machine. I had a hard time locating one, but finally found one for sale here on the forum, and jumped on it. It came in today, and I can't wait to get out and get some swing time in! Anybody have any good tips on this machine? I live in south GA. Lots of mineralization, and ground that's hard as a brick!
Thanks in advance.
Darren
darrenb, I hunt with a cz5 and can tell you that the cz5 is one of the deepest detectors made. I can give you a few pointers that will help you get started with your cz5.
1. the cz's need to be swept slow to get the great depth they are known for. sweep the coil slow and overlap your sweeps by at least 50 percent.
2. run the disc at zero and listen to the iron. it will help identify deep old square nails that might give a hightone as you sweep over them. running zero disc will let you hear they are iron, plus let you pick out good hightone signals mingled in with the iron trash.
3. check your signals at 90 degrees from your original sweep, if it repeats it is likely a good target. if it breaks up most likely trash. dig a few signals to see what they are.
4.run sensitivity around 6 or so. no need to max it out to get the best depth. this detector will get those deep coins with a strong hit on medium sensitivity.
5. get a good ground balance... either method works great and it is very easy to do. this will make the detector more accurate and less false signals.
6.set volume control to your liking, but I prefer it maxed out and loud signals on all targets. volume set under 5 will give strong signals on shallow targets and softer signals on deeper targets. it's your preference.
7.pick up a 5" coil if you can. it is awesome in the trash and is almost as deep as the 8 inch coil. the 10 1/2" coil seems to like coins on edge and is great for hunting large areas.
8.the 5 " coil will let you run higher sensitivity and it is deeeep for a small coil.
9.the analog meter is pretty accurate. much more so than the digital detectors I have used.
10. enjoy the cz5, it is a killer coin machine and built like a tank for years of service. Happy Hunting and hope this help you a little.....
I like my CZ3D mounted on my belt,,, but protect the coil plug-in from being banged around when kneeling down,,,, can get messed up easy that way,,,,,,,,, good luck and HH
That's kinda the problem... I seem to buy into all the hype on detectors and run out and buy them, only to discover later that I'm not really that fond of them. That's one thing I like about the CZ. Since they aren't making them anymore, the manufacturer isn't pushing sales. It seems that all the reviews on the 5 are honest reviews, and not a sales pitch. I'm thinking that I need to have a fire sale and move most of the machines that I don't use. Can't swing but one at a time!

Every one is different . What is great for you ,i might hate ..
From your list the CZ is far above others you have tried.
Still does not guaranty its for you but its a good place to try.
The CZ5 has been around for several years and has proven that it is a coin killer, and this is with 90's technology. I wouldn't trade my CZ5 for any of the new detectors made these days. Keep the CZ5 and those nice Tesoro detectors and dump the rest. HH..............
Yeah, but the coordination is lacking... I don't multitask very well at all! Can't chew gum and walk at the same time if I think too much about it. I agree with dumping most of the other machines, but I have to keep the AT Pro. It has been really good to me, and it is waterproof. I just got a 5" coil for the CZ. I'm ready to hit the trashy spots now. Has anybody tried one of the sunray probes made for the CZ series?
Thanks guys!
HH
darren
darren, the sunray probes are nice but it adds about 11 ounces to the CZ's weight which is already pushing close to 4 pounds. I used my sunray probe a few times and decided to sell it and just use my garrett pro pointer.
The pro pointer is faster for me and several times I forgot to switch my sunray back to coil and was hunting with the probe only hot. It basically comes down to your own personal preference, but the CZ5 with the sunray probe was just more weight than I wanted to swing.......and that 5" coil is a coin killer in trash. It is almost as deep as the 8 inch coil. You may never take that coil off after you try it............HH.
Just get out there and swing that thing! On my second CZ5 now, had a CZ7 and still have that CZ20/21 hybrid. Always keep at least one working CZ in your gear chest. Two if you play in water at all.
