New To Tesoro

MarkCZ

Well-known member
I have a used Vaquero on its way and I wanted to know if it has "Modulated" audio or not, I know it is what is and either way I'll learn to deal with it. The seller did say it was a High Tone "V"

Thanks

Mark

Welcome! There's always room for another Tesoro user.

Yes the Vaquero has a modulated audio response. It works really well with a good set of headphones.

Here's something for you to read so you'll be ready when your Vaquero arrives: http://www.tesoro.com/info/manuals/current/vaquero/vaqueromanual.html

Good Luck!

Well I have a set of SunRay Pro Golds that should work very well as far as I know. They also have a built in volume limiter.
Thanks for the link.

Hey Mark, great decision on the Vaq and I want to say that I believe you will be more than satisfied, and surprized with what your Vaq will do for you.I stood by and watched one of my digging buddies dig the deepest coin I ever witnessed dug. A silver18?? dime(worn thin and inscribed/carved) "LoveToken". He was forever "carefully"removing dirt from the hole and I could not believe how clean the Vaq was reading it all the way until we saw it in the bottom of the hole. Amazing, and if I had not watched, I would not have believed it. Enjoy and HH !!!, Charlie

Good for you mark.I have never heard anyone say anything bad about the cowboy. It does not quite have the modulation as a lot of Tesoro detectors.A deep coin or relic can sound more like it is a few inches deep.Supertuning can take away even more modulation but you get a few more inches in depth.Let us know how it checks out for you. Most prefer the high tone. ;-)

Congrats!

If you are not supertuned that modulated audio can give you an idea on depth.
Shallow objects can scream, deep objects could sound further away.
Lots of us hunt supertuned in disc and if you do that too as stated you will lose most of that ability to judge depth but you can hear the deeper targets easier.

I also have a Vaq with the high tone.
Some say you can hear the tones better especially if you have older ears, but I also hunt with a Compadre and a lower tone and I like both and don't see much of a difference in my finds because they all seem to react the same high tone or low, although I think I prefer the low overall.

A little tip and a personal preference in my hunting style vs. others...
Even though all of the mauals say to do this the same and thumb that disc knob up to the fade out point to determine the target type, I found that turning past that fade out point and then slowly turning back down till the target comes in gives me a much more accurate reading on target types, and how it comes in gives me a great amount of information, also.
Does it just "come in", is there crackling or clicks and if only clicks how many, for instance.
Swing that Vaq awhile and learn some of that language then try it and you will see what I mean.

Thanks for all the post everybody!

I've seen Video's and read a lot of post about thumbing the controls on the Tesoro's, now in my mind I'm thinking of these controls wearing out and getting floppy and signals getting jumpy and other problems like that. But, I don't read where anybody seems to have had any such trouble, are the controls that well made that while your hunting you can constantly spin and roll the controls over almost every target and they hold up?

Or do we send the unit back in regularly for a new set of controls?

Mark

One reason I decided to get a Tesoro was the word of mouth praise they get for being Hot on gold jewelry, What I want to do is to be able to go back to some of the places I've mainly coin-picked and work them with something different and try to pull out a little bit of gold, so I'm hopping the Vaquero will do good at that.

Mark

There's not a lot of thumbing going on. Most users, like myself, set the discrimination according to how trashy a site is and dig all good sounding beeps.

For instance, if I'm in an area that is swamped with beaver tail pull tabs, I set the discrimination to were they just start to break up and then dig all clean sounding signals.

If you've got the time to do it, knock yourself out. Me, I am going to drop, recover the target, and be looking at it while you get your thumb limbered up.

The reality of it is that you will eventually tire of dial spinning and just start digging. Eventually it occurs to you that, yes, I am going to dig everything that beeps, so why am I spending time determining where it is on the conductivity scale?

About the dials.... I had my power/sensitivity pot die on a fairly new Golden umax, but it was simply defective and not over used; I was that lucky 1 in 10000 guy on the part failure list. Otherwise, the only problem that I have had with them is cleaning the little grooves on their surface.

I have never met Mark in person but have talked with him on the phone a few times and have done business with him and he is a great guy, one of the nicest I have ever dealt with and there has been a number of people that I have bought and sold and traded with over the years. Welcome to the Tesoro section, you will love the Vaquero and don't worry about thumbing, I am a "thumber" and never had a problem with the controls. Some folks will put a small rubber o-ring under the ground balance knob to give it a bit more resistance so there is less chance of it moving if it gets bumped, etc. Let us know how you like the Vaq. Steve.

Can be replaced for $1-2.00, just a common Alpha brand pot that can be purchased just about anywhere.

I am a huge, big time thumber and I have done it so long and so many times I am very fast at it.
I just like to figure out and take a guess on what I might be digging and by thumbing that knob I can do that more often then not.
Also, that is just fun for me.
The knobs on both my Vaq and my Compadre are as good as the day they came out of the factory even after all of that movement so don't worry.

As far as the rumor that Tesoros are pretty good at finding gold, (and chains of all kinds, too), I am a believer.

Thanks Steve,
I just got an email stating that UPS has picked up the Vaquero at noon today and its in transit at this time, I'll check the tracking number in a bit and see what the expected delivery date is.

Okay, I downloaded the manual and all seems simple enough but help me to clear this up.
You set the threshold tone in "All Metal Mode" then switch to "Discrimination Mode" and in that mode its a silent search detector (yes) (no) ??

If so then the threshold tone is only setting a tone for the all metal mode right?

But, when you super tune it you crank up the threshold tone AFTER you switch to discrimination mode, but your warned to the volume being to loud if you switch back to all metal. (Right) (Wrong) ??
If right then why wouldn't I be able to just crank up the threshold and let the volume limiter in my SunRay Gold headphones absorb the over the top volume (Yes) (No) ??

Thanks

Mark

Hi, Here's the answers to your questions in order,,,,Yes,,Right,,Right,,No....If you was to use a threshold turned all the way up in all metal pinpoint mode then the volume would be to loud to allow detection of your item....It looks like it's not a perfect world but enjoy what you have and H.H.....JJ

Hey, three out of four and I don't even have the detector yet LoL.

And I didn't even have to start a new thread.

Welcome Mark. Probably the best purchase you have made in a while.:tesoro:

I was sent some pictures of the Vaquero, but they were HUGE! so I've been working on downsizing them with a little help from my brother Ron. Here is the package I've got coming, I told the seller after I saw the pictures that it looked a little used but not abused and that that was fine with me (I bought it)

See pictures below.
Did I mention that the one I got is coming with 2 coils?
