New to Tejon and.......

Hello to all the Tesoro users out there. I have been relic hunting for a number of years around Richmond/Petersburg areas and I guess you can figure out that I am a big civil war relic hunter. I have found a lot of nice cw relics over the years and yes it does get harder each year to find pockets of nice relics. I have used a white's, a minelab XS and a minelab exploer II (which I still use to this day).

Well my first trip out with the Tejon was less than I expected and read about. Trust me, I read all your post and did several metal detector reviews and post. I was very close to getting a Nauti 2ba to add to my quiver of detectors, but after reading and reading the Tejon sounded just as good and LIGHTER, a plus if you are swinging all day in the swamp bottoms. I have seen and used Nauti's and I know the depth they get (16"-18" I have seen it). I went out to a camp site that has produce some great finds with a couple of friends of mine. They could not believe what I pulled out of my truck...the Tejon. They looked at it and laughed. They thought it was my five year olds sons detector at first sight. They thought for sure the swamp bottoms of Petersburg would chew up this detector, it didn't (for now). They other detectors in use that day were a White's MXT and a Minelab Explorer II. Well, the White's won hands down this day with the Minelab coming in a close second and my Tejon......know where close!

The big joke was me, as I usually come out smelling like roses. They told me to keep using the Tejon because they could find all the relics and catch up with my collection. I so wanted to go back to the truck and get my Minelab Explorer II but when you walk miles from the truck the last thing you want to do is walk back before you have to leave.

Now, before anyone gets hot and jumps my stuff hear me out. I will say that this was my first trip out with the machine and like any things else, you have to get a feel for it. I will say that I am not impressed by the build of the machine. When I opened the small box it came in I was shocked by the appearenace. It just does not look like it will hold up to much abuse? Not like my other machines! I ahve done some more air test and it has done well...14" or more (not bad at all), but will it get 14" in the ground? If someone of great experience as some pointers, then I am all ears! I would love to see this detector unfold its potential that I read so much about. When I do find some goodies with it I will post! My first rating is a D+ and only a plus because of the weight, which was nice. I am now all ears..............go easy, I am just posting my early findings with this machine.

I don't have a Tejon but I just bought a Cibola. I'm going to be trying it out this weekend. P.S. Your output is much appreciated. God Bless and good huntin. morningstar.

Give it some time Wes and your buddies verbal abuse will turn from teasing you to cursing you. The Tejon will hold its own, but there are a few things that you need to do. Set your audio at about 3 o'clock, at that setting iron will have a distinctive "snap" to it. It may not be obvious at first, but you we become familiar with its sound if you have good high-end headphones. The Tejon does have a subtle language, but you need good headphones to hear it. Next, you must be sure you have ground balanced properly. If you dont you will loose depth. Balance it slightly positive for best results. Set your Sensitivity as high as you can, without the machine "chirping". On mine that is just below 10. You can actually run with it cranked all the way up, but once you stop moving the coil it will chirp like made. If you get a very weak signal, crank the sens and scan that spot carefully, the extra sens may help you ID it as good target. Set your machine so it just knock out foil. On mine its setting the disc pointer to the "o" in the word "foil". Test where your setting is by waving foil and a nickel across the coil You want to set it right where foil breaks up and you get a good hit on nickels. This machine is very hot on coins and buttons on edge, it will surprise you. It also will give you a very loud signal noise on targets as deep as 6 to 7 inches. You may think its a surface target by the loudness, but dont be fooled. It is also awesome on gold targets.

As far as ruggedness, I still have the same machine I got when Tesoro first came out with it. The battery doors are fine, and I have had no mechanical problems with it at all. It will hold fine, and in the rare case that it doesnt, Tesoro will fix it for you. Hang in there Wes, once you get familiar with the machine your buddies will change their tune. Good luck to you.

Sculley,

Thank you for your advice! That is what I need to hear and I will put all your information to test very soon, as I plan to hit a small camp site right in front of my neighborhood that has produce some fine eagle buttons last winter. It will be a tougher hunt with the foliage still on the trees but the weather here is finally cooler and long pants will not bake you. I will be in touch!

P.S.

To Morningstar, thank you for your comment and I hope you find great success hunting this weekend and can share your thoughts also. I just like to give input, bad or good, as long as it is constructive and not foul or unreasonable. Thanks again to the both of your for replying and HH!

I agree with Scully, give the Tejon more time. I mainly use an MXT and Tejon and my wife uses a Cibola. I can tell you the Tejon will run circles around an Explorer and MXT in the depth department on relics. The Tejon will find coins on edge that many detectors miss. Keep using the Tejon and you will find it's the best on relics. Good Luck.
