new to site... have few ?'s

Hi all. My name is Mike. I'm from the east coast of the beautiful state of Wisconsin { Onalaska.. N. of LaCrosse} I'm new into detecting and have some general ?'s. I was given a Bounty Hunter Discovery 1100 as a gift from my step-son. It's a blast, as we camp alot and that's where I do most of my "hunting". The owners manual is pretty vague. Through trial and error, mostly error, I've come adept at knowing the differences in the "tones". Anyways.... ? 1. is this model a good model, or just a "toy"? I find things mind you, and enjoy doing it, but if there are any suggestions here. ? 2. Can I use this model in or near water? Shallow stream beds mostly, and do these things detect gold? ? 3. Can I get other coils for this? If the coil i have won't work in shallow water, can i get one that will? ? 4. Can someone explain in lay-mans term how to set/use the discrimination modes? This part of the operation kinda baffles me so I generally use it on the surface to 2" level and go by the tones to eliminate stuff. I'm sure the discrimination setting would help, but I'm not to sure on the set-up.

Like I said.. I'm new. Sorry if I sound silly. I really enjoy detecting and am happy with what I have. But if I do more, maybe I need something different.
Any help and/or suggestions would be great.

Mike

I am not familiar with you unit, but this is one of the best places to ask questions. Lots of experience hanging around. Someone I am sure is familiar. Welcome aboard, good luck and HH

Hello MHorge and welcome to the family...

The 1100 I believe is the lower end of the Discovery line sold by Radio Shack, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Sports Authority in my area anyways...it is not the best machine, but it is better than a lot out there, and will do you well once you get to know her...
As far as setting the SENSitivity, you want to turn it up as far as you can without the detector giving you false signals on every sweep...
The DISCrimination you want to set as low as possible to start out, and you want to dig EVERYTHING, until you get to know the machine and what it is telling you...
As you learn, you can turn up the DISC to DISC out iron, then pull tabs, then bottle caps, etc...
Here is a link to possibly a better manual than what you have now....

Welcome aboard Sir. Just my way of setting the Discovery 2200 [so its not right or ...well could be wrong] Anyway....
1. Set sensativity as high as you can without getting lots of false signals [ie detector raises cain but you dig only to find nothing over and over again]
2 Disc out or 'notch' nothing except iron [unless you are hunting old sites then disc nothing at all. On your detector [md] a pull tab and a gold ring read and sound the same. I missed [only God knows how many] gold rings learning that lesson. None of the detectors on the market are that great at telling a ring and pull tab apart. Even the numeric displays read in the same range. That Discovery 1100 of yours will pay for itself and buy your next detector if you just get to know it and run her till the wheels fall off.

Thanks Doug in OR.
I think i'll stay with the 1100 for a time, at least till I get more better. Do you think I may be missing alot seeing as I use the "surface -to-2in. " setting? I do alot of my hunting at campgrounds while camping, if bottle caps and tent pegs were worth anything...
I want to try after the local "fests", you know... carnivals, fairs and the like. I've had good luck so far, mostly change and a few rings, {campers lose crap!} but like I stated, I may be missing a whole butt load of stuff.
This site is great. Lots of help and hints. I look forward to being a "regular" here and also look forward to meeting hunters from all over.

Again, thanx Doug.

Definitely up your sensitivity at least to the 6 inch mark if you can without too much chatter...Most modern coins are at 2-4" and older coins, 4-8 inches or more...
