New to MXT...have question

deepsix

New member
I just rec'd my new mxt as an update to my old tried and true 6000DI/Pro. Tested it at local park where I still consistantly can pull out coins with the 6000, so I used the park as a 'control' to see how the MXT stacked up. Spent an hour or so with the 5.3 " coin and pulled up 3 dimes , one nickle and 4 zinc pennies. Second day switched to the 9.5 " coil and hunted same area for about an hour also...pulled 4 dimes , 4 more zincs and a quarter...both days the finds were 4-6"+ deep and likely missed by my 6000. I think I've already figured out the answer to my question...but...here is my observation: the 5.3 coil cover way less ground but is much more stable and VDI much more consistant and reliable read...the 9.5" chattered much more, even in in what I thought were low trash areas and difficult to use with confidence...Can I assume that this is the case and that I should stick with the smaller coil most of the time?? ...and if that is so would'nt you think that the 5.3 would be the standard issue and the 9.5 sold as an 'accessory' item?...I 'd appreciate MXT user's feedback...thanks!

I can guarantee that the MXT really IS an "update" (call it "improved') step from the 6000 Di Pro. Not that the oldie is a bad detector, just that the MXT really offers much more overall.

That right there suggests that the local park has quite a number of targets and that you are likely to recover some coins, regardless of the make/model used. To see how the two models really "stack up," you would need to immediately grab the other and sweep over a target just located with one detector. Compare EACH target in the naturally-found setting prior to recovery. That factors in weather; personal rest, patience, attitude; also the position of approach, target position, and nearby potential masking targets.

Possibly missed by the 6000, IF you actually swept the search coil over that coin-sized spot. You might not have swept the 950 and 5.3 Eclipse coils directly over the very same small spot on those two days. Besides, as you already stated, you consistently pull coins from there.

Yes, as a rule smaller coils can be a bit more stable as they are seeing less ground. Also, since the site, by your comment, has "low trash areas", then with trash there the 950 will certainly be more challenged.

No way.....I like the stock 9 1/2" coil and it pinpoints on a dime. Had to say it. It's a great coil with depth. The 5.3" is another one of my faves, but only in very trashy areas. Everyone has their own "fave" coil. Depends on where you live, what you're going to hunt, how deep you want to hunt, etc. My first two choices in coils would be the 9 1/2" stock coil and then the 5.3" coil. IMHO, Nancy

I use the 5.3 and our ground is terrible. It has a lot of iron. I have to agree with Nancy the 9.5 has no problems here. I only use the 5.3 if it is trashy. I can't see the 9.5 being a problem. The best coil is the one that works for you. Rob

Well, I'm a believer in if it works for you, use it. However, my first outing with the MXT and the 9.5 coil was in a very trashy park and with that coil the machine was virtually unusable -- the beeps sounded like a machine gun going off and the display was wild. Switched to the 4X6 shooter and the difference was unbelievable and I was able to pull a number of goodies out of the trash. Since then I've found the 4X6 shooter, the 5.3 and the 6X10DD to all be better coils for many of the areas I hunt primarily due to better target separation. In addition, the depth on coins with each has been good in relation to the coil size at least in my soil. Sometimes I do use the 9.5 or the Super 12 when I want the coverage and am hunting in large, relatively clean areas, but the others get the real work out for my hunting. My two bits.
