New to Minelab

michele maher

New member
Hi all, I am new to the use of Minelab. I just got my Minelab Explorer SE in today. I have been detecting for about 7 years now. I am mainly a Garrett user. Thought it was time to try something different. I have used a Whites MXT & XLT and a Detector Pro in the past also a Fisher water detector & a one knober Tesoro. I don't remember the modle of those, but I have mainly stuck with Garrett. I currently own a Garrett Sea hunter Mark II and a Ace 250. I put my detector together tonight and took it out in my back yard tonight without even reading my manual first. (I know shame on me!) I was just too excited!! My first dig was a 1981 quarter. Then I found 3 pennies. I know that is nothing great but not too bad for only about 20 min. of detecting in the dark with no flashlight. I can't wait to try it tomorrow in the light. Now all I need to do is find me an old spot to detect.

P.S. Love my new detector so far!!

I love mine more and more each day I use it! Take the manual in stride - the Explorer is a much different animal than the Garretts. The sounds are SO different than any other machine. You may need some patience, and if you need help the people on this forum have been awesome.
Good luck!

I have loved Garretts too - since the early 70s when I cut my teeth on a Master Hunter BFO. I too have had lots of machines (Garretts: Master Hunter BFO, American S-1 & S-2, GTA1000, GTAx 550, GTAX1250 and presently the ACE 250; Fisher 1280x now replaced by the Tesoro Stingray & an Eldorado; Bounty Hunter: BFO units from the 70s; Whites Coinmaster II and I probably am missing a couple in there some place.)

Though Garretts and Whites are great I kept seeing friends with Minelabs digging deeper holes and retrieving older items. I didn't want to remain a 'playground coinshooter'. I picked up an Explorer II last part of January so have only been out with it once so far...it sure is different in many ways than all those other machines. It will take a little time getting used to the Minelab. I have a ghost town nearby that I plan on using the Minelab on. The place had over 5,500 residents in the 1800s and by 1910 it was down to about 20 people. People had to have lost stuff and the coins will all be silver or if I am lucky gold.

Not often one hears of a lady detectorist = and especially one that detects in the water. Glad to have your experiences and you here. Be sure to post your finds so we can drool over them

Oh yeah I am in Michigan - on Michigan's largest inland lake - Houghton Lake - and its deepest area is 21 feet. Rest of the lake averages 4 to 8 feet.

Happy :minelab: Detecting, Michele

It's a lot different machine than what you're use to but WORTH every penny of money and time invested to LEARN it ...

Good Hunting
Mike

If you are able to find an older Park or some other place to detect, you will soon find out why there is so much more Older Coins and Relics posted on the Minelab Explorer Forum. All the Explorer's are Silver Snipers and they all go DEEP. I have had my Explorer XS since fall of 2001 and since I have purchased it, I have never turned back. I have a HUGE collection of Coins and Relics that I have found since then and it is a lot of fun doing research and finding older sites so you can add to one's collection. So Good Luck and HH with your new machine and I look forward to seeing some postings of your finds, that is if you have a Scanner or a Digital Camera. P.S. You may want to purchase a SunRay X-1 Probe for your detector later on because you are going to need it due to digging deeper for Older Coins and such. Again Good Luck and HH.

how's it going michele miss you down at galveston. i don't get to go down there as much as i used to, to busy. you ever hunt that beach at lake charles. congradulations on getting the minelab there hard to beat. even harder when you learn them. hh willia

The drive-in movie that used to be on the east side of Sulphur; could you get in that area? They built the I-10 bridge at Lake Charles in 1949 and 1950. Before the bridge, swimming and boating was done on the south shore of the lake. There were fruit stands, restaurants and marinas on the south shore. Where the old Highway 90 bridge to South Lake Shore Drive, on the north side of the bridge; there were always vendors on each side of the road selling bird houses and other wooden items. Lots of coins change hands there. Now since I haven't been in the area in more than 35 years, I don't know if you can get to any of those now.

Thanks for the info John. I will check into that. It is raining here today or I would go exploring today. Where do you live now in LA?

Hey Willa, It has been a long time. Have you done much water detecting lately? I guess you know I moved to LA about a year and 1/2 ago. I miss the beach & being in the water. My dad even built me a mini dredge to use while I was water hunting. I have done some water detecting here. I found two gold rings one with small diamond, at the swimming area off of the I-10 in Lake Charles. I also found my first class ring at the edge of the water there with my Ace 250. Now I can't wait to take the SE out and try it. I am hoping for some deep rings and coins.
Happy hunting! Michele

haven't been able to do alot of hunting the last 2 years. working 6-7 days a week alot. then that freaking hurricane didn't help anything. i am going tomorrow i hope. looks like this storm is moving some sand. water should be fairly clam tomorrow. hh

I'm new to the MineLab also. As a matter of fact, I should say I'm new to the whole hobby. I had an old Fisher that I rarely used. I bought my SE in November and used it quite a bit until the weather got cold. I can't wait to get back out with it again!

Oooops... Sorry for the double 'L" Michele.

Nice talking to you in the park the other day. I forgot to give you my Cell #. Nice to see you Post here. There is a lot of guys here on Forum that really know the Explorers. Mine should be back here next week sometime. Will be glad to help you on it. Don't know how much you know so just ask the questions and we will all help you out. I got to go over to FL. pretty Quick and take care of some business. I hunt all over the place around here and there is not very many of us that hunt here so we got it all to ourselves, ain't that nice. :D: :D: . Later Jerry aka Tinfoil

Hi Tinfoil, It was nice meeting you the other day. Did you dig any thing good?? I haven't ordered the small coil yet. But after detecting yesterday I know I will be needing it. Call me when you get back from Florida and we can do some detecting together. I could use some pointers on the new SE. Just getting use to the sounds is a big change for me. Reminds me sounds you hear on Star Track. I am still in shock though that I found a gold ring on my first time out with the SE. I hope that is the beginning of many surprises.
Ring Girl (Michele)

You need something smaller in the trash. My 4X7 went to Vegas with my SE. I let Sandy at M/L try it out. She loved it. My SE will be back this week some time. I need to get up with you and set your new SE up for hunting around this area. Let me know if you want to use the 7.5" coil. The only thing I got that day with the CZ3D was 1 43P war nickle down 10"s and a 1917 wheat down 9"s. Pickings there are very very slim there anymore. I left plenty of shallow Zinc's though . I don't dig them there if they are shallow. I would be happy to help you out with your SE. :D: :D: Jerry aka Tinfoil

Hey Tinfoil, I would love to try out that 7.5"DD coil. I took the SE out today to a few spots. found a few pennies and dimes. Lots of trash! I need to order that 4" coil today. I asked my husband if I could and he said sure. I looked on line @ Kelly Co and they were running about $169. I guess I will call and try talking to JW and see what kind of deal he can give me. I am defiantly going to need a prob. What kind should I get? I think someone suggested the sunray. Any feed back from anyone would be appreciated on what to get.
I should be free all week to go hunting except for Friday. I think I will be free for detecting Sat. too if you are around maybe we could do some detecting. Give me a call.
Michele, Ring Girl

It is well worth the money and it saves precious time in the hole so you can move onto the next target. Also, the Probe discriminates between Iron and Conductive Items just like the Explorer does. The Uni-Probe doesn't discriminate and will sound off on Iron also if in the hole with a good target which in turn will make you chase the wrong target and make one get frustrated. And one other thing, with the SunRay X-1 Probe, you will have less of a chance hitting a target when they are deep and you will have less worries about damaging a Key Date Coin or piece of Jewelry. Hope this helps you. Good Luck and HH.:detecting:
