NEW TO METAL DETECTING

I have a few questions I'm hoping someone can help me out with. I'm going to be getting the Garrett GTI 2500 and was wondering if it's the best to use if a lot of time is spent at the beach. I want a detector that's pretty good at detecting all types of treasure. Are these things pretty dependable? What about moisture? I'm also going to be searching trails, fields things of that nature also. And does anyone recommend detecting for a 7 year old? My daughter thinks she'd like it. And is the Treasure Hound search coil worth it?

There are a lot of posts about starting out detecting. Many in the past 3 months. There is a real good search engine for this site that you can use to get tons of useful information.

My standard answer to your question is start out someplace really easy like a playground with bark chips. You can practice there without doing too much damage to somebodies grass. Run in coin or jewelry mode with sensitivity around 6.5. This is the number Uncle Willy gives everybody and Uncle Willy is one of my detecting heroes. The beach would be a good place to start too. I'd stick to the dry sand areas at first. Get used to your detector. Practice pinpointing ad IDing targets.

I think using your expensive GTI 2500 too close to the water is asking for a lot of trouble especially to start. A stray wave could put you out of the detecting business in a hurry. As for wet sand I'll let others who are more qualified answer that.

A 7 year old will have a real hard time swinging a 2500. Even my Ace 250 was too heavy for my 7yo niece and she is pretty athletic. She didn't have the coordination to use it and swing properly so she got frustrated. There are other ways to involve youngsters. They can dig if the soil in not too hard. They can carry your loot which believe me they really love doing. Promise them a cut and they'll be interested. When I am hunting with my girls in tow I always make sure there is some other diversion nearby.

Good luck. I started out with an Ace 250 and graduated up to a 2500. It will be a little daunting at first so don't rush things. One day it will all click and you'll be finding tons of swag.

If your new to detecting I would start out slow. I would buy an Ace 250. Then get the Sniper coil and 9x12 big coil. All this for very little cash. You can easily get 90% of your money back if you decide to sell. Now when you work the beaches you can use the large coil. Then when your 7 year old uses it put the sniper coil on. This makes the 250 pretty lite in weight. Well it's already lite! Also you can use the sniper in the tot lots. Later you can buy the big bad boy for yourself.

Has anyone dealt with Kellyco? I'm thinking of buying the Ace 250 Sports Package...Is it really worth getting the extra coil 6.5X 9 ? Will I need this coil or should I just get the base package for around $214. and buy the 4.4 coil then. Will I really need a case and the plastic coil covers? Thanks... I haven't started to Metal Detecting
yet I want to get started.:clapping:

If you've never detected before you're biting off a big chunk with a 2500. This ain't exactly a beginner detector and has quite a learning curve. The Treasure Hound is only for hunting deeply buried caches or treasures. Seven isn't to young to start detecting but get a simple detector she can handle and one that is light. The Ace 250 would be dandy for her.

Kellyco is fine, The 6.5 X 9 is the standard coil for the 250. The optional coils are the 9 x 12 and 4.5 inch Sniper. Actually you don't need a case or coil covers. I've hunted for 44 years without either.

Chris:
I have an Ace 250 and hope to graduate to the 2500. How much difference did it make for you?

You might also consider one of the many $10-25 dollar small used metal detectors that you can find on Ebay or garage sales for your daughter to use. She will have a blast!

I like the Ace 250 very much and found a ton of stuff with it. $692.78 (4 months) to be exact. The difference between the 2500 and the 250? Imaging, All Metal for super deep detecting, a bit more depth in discriminate mode, much better pinpointing, better target id. I would put it like this. With the 2500 it is much easier to eliminate junk targets like cans or small bits of aluminum. With practice you can do the same thing with technique and the 250. I bet about 5 percent (or less) of the stuff I find with the 2500 I would not have found with the Ace 250. As of right now my total with the 2500 is $775.01 (5 months.) I just passed the 250 last Thursday when I found a nice 14k charm and I had another real good day yesterday.

An analogy I often use comes from my friend who shoots competitive archery. He routinely shot 295 out of 300 with an $800 bow. When he upgraded to a $3000 bow he started shooting 300 out of 300 on a regular basis. It took the superior bow to elevate his shooting to that level, but he was already a very good archer with a medium priced bow.

As I always post: The only detector I ever use is the GTI 2500. The only complaint I have about it is that it is too heavy. (I can now crush small stones with my right hand.) Even when I switch to a non-imaging coil, like the scorcher, for an hour or two I miss that feature.

Read some of Johns recent posts about how he chooses which detector he uses for certain types of hunts. He has about 10 Garrett detectors and somehow finds a way to use them all. I am going to add another detector next near and I am leaning toward the Infinium but if his experience with the Gold detector are good I would consider that too.

Good luck.

Chris

Yeah I'm going to be reporting on the Scorpion soon as I can get out with it. I have the 4.5 coil for it and am anxious to see what that little puppy does.
