Hey everyone I am new to this hobby. I was wondering when you clean the coil that comes with the at Pro, the dd coil is there a skid plate on the bottom that needs to come off to clean grit out or is it something that doesn't come off. It seems to be on there pretty good. I don't want to mess it up. Thanks this is a great forum. I love this hobby

If you bought it new, there is no removable coil cover. If you bought it used, there may be one but the seller would have told you about it because it is an accessory that comes at additional cost.
HH, mac

Welcome to the forum and if you use a plastic coil cover, it needs to come off occasionally to remove the metallic grit that manages to get under the coil.

Welcome!
Yeah, be very careful if you try to remove that coil cover...you dont want to bust your coil...i dont use them, never have, and have an immense amount of coil time with no issues...I would imagine if a guy heated it up with some sort of hairdryer type thing to soften it a little, that may work?..I'm sure some other poster will be along to give you some better advice.

Thanks for everyone's feedback. It just seems gritty but they seem to be attached really well. I'm going keep it in one piece until I know for sure. I've read posts that say to remove the cover to clean it. Thanks for the help

Hi. I have a question for guys who are more skilled than me in this domain. Can I use something like this? (store in back bag) http://www.mediafun.ro/upl/manuals/6v_12ah_ultracell.pdf
What do you thing? Of course, before use, must modify battery holder to make the connection.

Wow that is a big battery! But for a reality check fully charged AA's last 20hrs+, that is 2.5 eight hour workdays of detecting. I don't think anyone has had a need or has ever wanted to use a giant external battery, What would be the benefit?

I would leave it alone , your OK as you know the more you mess with it , ; you might lose that tight fit

I intended to stay somewhere in the wild for 1 week or more, and I don't want to take with me so many battery. Finally, I could take this battery, or another, not so big (http://www.mediafun.ro/upl/manuals/6v_7ah_ultracell.pdf). The battery could be kept in a leg belt bag like this http://www.amazon.com/Kingzer-Motorcycle-Cycling-Thigh-Tactical/dp/B00J2L34FQ. It is an option, an idea. Anyway, if is working, the price is better, the final price is lower.

Muddpuppy,

I agree, I would not mess with the coil cover , the more you mess with the coil : you will take the chance that something is going to happen. I mentioned before that coil covers will start to get lose with constant removals over time. If the coil cover gets dirty. that's OK.
Metal detecting can be a messy, dirty hobby but very exciting.
I MD in Fields a lot , No need for one . I guess if your Detecting out West or some areas around sharp rocks , coil cover would help.
