New to metal detecting

Hi everybody. I have been metal detecting for about four months now. I am using a Garrett 2500 GTI,strictly detecting for coins. I have gotten quite good at finding new clad coins; howevwer, am not having much luck at finding old coins. I mostly detect in area parks and forest preserves that are quite old. I have been detecting in factory discriminate coins, and just recently been bumping the sensitivity up or down .5 to experiment. I have learned to slow down, swing from various angles, and detect in more out of the way areas like under trees, steep slopes, etc.to try areas that may not have been heavily detected. As far as old coins I have found approx. 25 wheat pennies, and 2 1941 mercury dimes. One mercury dime was in my backyard at approx. 5 inches, and the other in a forest preserve dating back to the 1800's. The dime in my yard was easy to find because of very little trash, but the one in the park much more difficult because of tons of trash! I found it on an erroding slope, next to stairs, under a bush at 3 inches. I was told by a couple of seasoned detectorists that years ago they found lots of barber coins in this forest preserve. I have just purchased a 4.5 inch scorcher coil from Garrett to try in the heavy trash. I was wondering if anyone is using this coil, any recommended way to set my unit to use this coil besides no imaging, their comments on it, and what kind of depth I can expect under ideal conditions. Also I noticed if I hold the unit up a bit and wiggle it, it starts ringing targets, any idea if this is normal? Any suggestions that could make me better at this great hobby would be greatly appreciated.

One piece of advice - just because an area is old doesn't mean it's loaded with old coins. Remember - detectors have been around since about 1932. Read my post on depth and loss of discrimination.

If you found old coins in your yard I'd keep hunting there also. Over and over again. From different angles and even in all metal. That 2500 I hear is a great detector so you should do well with it pretty soon. Actually your doing well with it already. Welcome to the forum. Uncle Willy is more like a father to us then a uncle.

I looked over your article on depth and discrimination, thanks alot for all the good information!!! Being new to this hobby, one of my first mistakes was to jack up the sensitivity thinking I have figured it all out and was going to find all these deep old coins. Cant wait until we get a little rain, as the ground is really dry, so I can try some of this new information. Thanks again, and let you know how my progress is going.

From the land ofthe Bluenose...welcome to the forum and hobby. As you get more familar with your machine things will get easier and you will get more comfortable also. Swing low, swing slow and dig deep.

Yeah the wet ground will improve your success as it increases the conductivity of targets. Keep us posted.
