New to metal detecting

I know there is pretty much a science as well as common knowledge to metal detecting. I am brand new at this and have done plenty of research through blogs and websites as I await the arrival of my MD. I ordered the Bounty Hunter Lone Star since I am a first timer. I felt it would be a good starting point. I live in the Baltimore area, so we are full of history as well as beaches and about 2 hours from the Atlantic. I was just looking for any tips or advice that I may not come across to help me out on my first hunt. Thank you very much.

Steve

Hey Steve. Welcome to metal detecting. As you probably already know you'll need time and patience to learn your machine. Next is location. Playgrounds and schoolyards are great places to start. Of course you need to know how to dig the proper plug with a tool other than a shovel. The area you dig should look like nobody was ever there. Finally, be outstanding by picking up the garbage you come across. Keep in touch with your fellow detectorists here, ask questions and let us know how you are doing. Happy Hunting. Matt

Welcome, i just got started myself and also have a Lone Star. I have done well with it you should do very well and have a lot of fun with it. This is a great place to learn and ask questions. Good luck.

Hey loosecannon,

I just purchased a lonestar about 5 weeks ago. The insruction that came with the lonestar are ok and have been trying to use the settings they recomend. What settings are the best for say the beach or if I'm in the woods.

thanks

I would get some test items like pull tabs a few coins to test your machine an disc also using it in an easy place were there are newer coins just to get some
use with the unit,it just takes some practice to get good at it.

I just received the Bounty Hunter Commando as a Christmas gift. I am excited about getting started. We live on 10 acres of land that had a old home on it. We found an old horse shoe a year ago and I am looking forward to finding so other new treasures. Any suggestions for wooded areas?

Hello to everyone. I am trashman. only because of my job, I drive a trash truck, haha. Thank you all for the free advice. I have a bounty hunter pioneer 505 and it is still a little confusing to me but from all of your advice I am learning, alot. I figured I would join because I love looking at other peoples finds and dream of finding some gold rings or what ever. I am very new to detecting but I am already hooked. Looking forward to reading alot about your finds and will be glad to post mine. So far I have only found $1.42 worth of coins.

Dominator.. How are you making out with your MD. Are you finding anything. I started about the same time you did last April. I love my Bounty Hunter it's an old one, a 2200 Elite. I works great. I love how the different sounds for different metals. I've found 10 silver coins, 2 gold rings, 10 silver rings, loads of junk jewelry, and probably over $500.00 in coins, and probably 40 chuckycheese tokens. I'm retired, so I am able to get out alot. Schools work best for me. I never go inside, there usually fenced off, so I hit the schools where there is grass out front. Let us know how you are doing.
