New to metal detecting.....

robie

New member
I bought an Excaliber II and am waiting for it to arrive this week. I plan on doing alot of MDing with my brother this summer.
I understand that the Excaliber only has audio alerts. I have the typical 'MiracleEar' hearing with the high-pitched tinitus and I do wear hearing aids. I'm hoping that the tones are audible to me. Does anyone have similar experience with 'audio-only' alerts? Can visual alerts be installed?
Thanks for your help. Robie.

Would be difficult to rig up a visual alert system for your detector. It was not made for it.
The standard tones for the Sov/Xcal are not really all that high on the top end.
I have a lot of high freq hearing loss and tinnitus due to jet noise, but do not wear a hearing aid because I hear almost normal levels in the voice range of frequencies. I have had no difficulty with my Sovs, and have even increased the tone range on them to suit my preferences. So you may not have a problem.....you will find out when you use it.

Thanks HH. Most of my hearing loss is due to jet engines also. USAF C-5's. I was a Loadmaster on them back in the '70s.
How about you....USAF?

C5 ??? They are pretty quiet compared to most. Good old fat albert. For some reason reminded me of a goose. Must have been the nose.
Yep. USAF 20 yrs. EW tech (electronic warfare). Lots of different planes around. Mostly worked on F4 and B52 .Screaming 400 hz 3 phase cooling fans and pumps in the shop too.
Not really a clean or quiet career.
Sometimes miss it, but then I think about the BS stuff and remember why I retired at 20.

And I still think that SAC sucks.

I hear ya. But I do miss it. Had a good time. Had the best of friends. Decided to go to school. then got married and..........
It's been a fun ride so far and now i have metal detecting for another interest...! I'm really a FNG on this so any advice is appreciated. My brother has been MDing for years. He's my mentor. I ordered a Minelab Excaliber II so that i can use it at the beach too. Stay in touch. (Zoomies stick together. ;) )

One big family forever robie.
We may even have been on the same plane one time. Was coming back from Udorn Thailand and caught a C5 out of Yakota to California back in the 70's.

You can take most stuff for the Sov to be pretty much identical to the Xcal. Pretty much the same machine. Takes time, but you will either love them or hate them. Listen close and give it a chance.

Art USAF retired and enjoying it.

Tinker was mostly depot back then I think.
I was at Wright Pat, Udorn, Offutt. K.I.Sawyer, and Kadena . Also tdy to a bunch of places. If the food and beer were good, I could take it pretty good. Can't work without good food and beer.

Some way to beat the Nam draft?? Join up and stay for 20.

Art, I was in from '74 to '78. went to udorn and alot of yakota trips. Maybe we did intercept..... I was the good-looking crew member ;) ...... small world.
Thanks for the help and info.

Udorn half of 72, then back for 73/74. First time, the infamous 179 day tdy. Second time for a year.
Good looking crew member? Not sure what to say about that......considering what I did when not working, sleeping or drinking. Those long trips really were a pain. Only cared about getting where I was going. That C5 ride on the upper deck was nice though. much better than a stretch 8 or a KC 135.

Too much off topic here, and some things I am tempted to say about the local recreation at some of these places. Must have taken 10 years off my life.

Good looking or not, welcome to the Minelab crew.

I understand. i did too much 'recreating' over there too.
The C-5 was really comfortable. Especially up front in the cockpit/cabin area. six bunks, 20 seats, full kitchen, latrine.
Thanks for the welcome. Be talking to ya.
