New to metal detecting, detector recommendation needed

Hi Everyone,
Well my dad saw an article on someone finding an 8 pound gold nugget in a creek in California, now he's ready to hit the jackpot on his property in Michigan. He was ready to run out to Kmart looking for a metal detector. I told him to hold off since I saw this site before, and told him to let me get some experienced input.

So I am looking at what we should be looking for in a detector, how much should we be looking to spend to get something other than junk that dad will throw or wrap arond a tree (Lol)
And a recommendation as to what brand, model would be best.

And last of all, user friendly.

I had a friend tell me to try school yards and beaches. Any other ideas would be welcome.

Thanks in advance : )

I don't want to sound rude, but you should, repost under the metal detecting forum above as your post will most likely be deleted or moved. Feedback is for praise and complaints, of companies and dealers and people we trade with or buy from. I will say be prepared to spent around $200 or more for a good dependable unit. I'll let the others give you their thoughts as to brand. And you will be better off going to a quality sporting goods store than K-mart. If it isn't made by one of the manufacturers listed on this site, it is probably cheap imported junk. Welcome aboard and have fun hunting.

Gold nugget detectors are specialized. Three good VLF (very low frequency) machines are the Tesoro Lobo SuperTRAQ - $700; Fisher Goldbug II - $800; Whites GMT - $750. These three machine will find sub-gram gold to 7" in depth. Then you get into the Pulse Induction (PI) machines. If you are detecting for gold, there is one name - Minelab, and their GPX 5000, sells for $5,500.00 - Bottom line, do your homework. Big Nuggets! - Terry

How about giving us a dollar range?

And from the sound of it your Dad is mainly looking for gold (prospecting)
Or is he looking for coins/jewery and maybe a hit at the gold from time to time?

Mark
