Hi everyone...just got my first medal detector for xmas...cant wait to start hunting...I live in Dunlap...any good ideas? Thank's...Jim

Hi Jim,

First of all, do you know the proper way to retrieve a target without damaging the ground? That's one of the main rules of metal detecting and always ask permission before any digging. These are just a couple of the rules of the hobby. What type of detector did you get? Have you detected before or is this a first for you?

We have a meeting coming up and I will send you information if you would like to join us for the evening.

HH,
Nancy

Welcome to the PATH forum Jim, we hope you get to come to our meetings which are the last Wednesday of each month at the North Branch Library not far from you. What kind of detector did you get for Christmas?

One good idea helping you get used to your new detector is hunting the tot lots (playground) and dig all targets that are not iron. Pay close attention to to what the detector is telling you with the sounds it makes and what is on the display if you have one. You will soon learn what is under your coil and you will be able to tell trash from treasure eliminating wasted time digging the trash.

Hi Jim! Welcome! Spend these cold days reading everything you can about your detector and the hobby. You tube is a great place to learn the hobby also. Search "metal detecting code of ethics" on the Internet great information there.

I joined this hobby myself a year ago and love it. Luckily I did these things and did myself and metal detecting a favor. Saving myself some headache and learning that my actions, mainly target retrieval, could harm the hobby or bring bad attention to it.

Any way, welcome and good luck.

Hi Jim, Welcome to the forum. you might try some snow hunting......seems to me I remember a popular sledding hill out towards dunlap...somewhere between dickinson and grange off 91 on the east side. could try tossn some coins in the yard...snow...and practice.no real huntin goin on till we thaw out...less your goin south. Good luck!

Hi Jim, you have two members in Princeville that could give you some help. You have some good spots in town that are not hunted out. Also do some research while it is frozen out as to where you can get permission to detect. Any friends or relatives who have older properties? And as mentioned please read up on target retrieval. After you recover an item from the soil you want to make it look like you were never there. Hope to see ya at the meeting.
