New (To Me) Tesoro On The Way

I have been detecting about 25 years, swung mostly Tesoro's (love em). I have used a few other brands in the last couple years but dog gone it they aren't Tesoro's.Just something about them "simple" works good get er done beep & diggers that I like. No matter how hard I try to like a multi-tone TID detector, I just can't get used to them, sure I can cover up the display or not look at it but I can't turn off the multi-tone feature (on most detectors). I just bought a used Tesoro Conquistador (not the uMax one) from a member on one of the forums. From the pictures it looks very good, comes with the 8" brown coil not the white spoke 9x8 that the uMax version Conquistador comes with. I don't hear or can't find much info on the Conquistador but I'm thinking its a Tesoro so it has to be good. I hunt for coins/jewelry in school grounds/tot lots/etc. never any beach hunting. The only thing that I have read is that the Conquistador isn't as deep as other Tesoro models. But ask 100 people about any brand/model detector and 50 will tell you that it is deep and the other 50 will tell you that it isn't. It is winter up here in upstate New York snow covered but it is a nice feeling that I have a Tesoro on the way to use next season.

P.S. I also splurged this Christmas and ordered myself my first "decent" set of headphones, I have used headphones for along time but never a top of the line so to speak set. Although the ones I ordered aren't the top dogs but I think they should do the job. I ordered a set of Jolly Rogers (the regular model ones not the ultimates). Can't wait to warm weather gets here now. Happy Holidays everyone! Steve.

Don't know anything about the Conquistador, but sure looks cool to me.
I picked up a Bandido II (actually was never used - still in the box) a fella never got around to trying. It's like a classic (to me) that I couldn't resist. Fun to swing once in awhile - I would think the same for the Conquistador.

Headphones - I started with them, always use them, and can't see detecting without them. Quality it must be.

Good luck with tha new machine.

Tell me Stveve, can ya shovel snow with that new fangeled

machine you're gettin thar old bubba.....?....:poke:

Better ta laugh than cry. neither will melt tha snow. But

laughin is more fun,

Hey I know that it will give you many hours of great hunting. Best of luck. Bill in Texas

I Know what you're saying because I didn't swing over to a lot of TID use until the late '80s/early '90s, and even then I still have a non-metered model at hand for an ample amount of my detecting.

Now, having said that, I think one TID model could sill the bill to serve you well, and that's White's M6. At the flip of a trigger-toggle you can activate Tone ID, or turn it off.

The first Conquistador will provide similar Tesoro performance you're used to ... probably. It might depend on the internal GB setting from the factory, or if someone has tweaked it, and your discrimination setting.

You see, the Conquistador had a 'quirk' or 'glitch' in the circuitry design when it relates to the Disc. control and the GB setting. usually, we are concerned about whether or not the GB adjustment is tied in to both the All Metal and Discriminate mode for peak performance. Well, yes, they are tied together, but not properly. On several of these models that friends, consumers, and even a distributor had and wanted the GB trimmer tweaked for a different coil, I noted an issue that had to be taken into consideration.,

As an example, we know that quite often when going to a different coil, especially a larger coil, the GB settings of the factory preset models can be off. Usually set too negatively and that results in false signals when the coil is raised from the ground or swept over a hole or uneven ground. A dealer friend wanted to use the 10X12 coil for coverage and maybe a little better depth and had mounted it on their Conquistador, only to encounter constant falsing. The GB was too negative.

So, I opened it up and proceeded to adjust the GB trimmer, setting it for a just-slightly positive GB for some more mineralized ground in their area. But, one thing I didn't check (because you often don't have to) was the Discriminate level setting. They had it set up near US 5

I own the Conquistador Umax model. I have also heard that it isn't as deep as some of the other models of the past ( with manual ground balance). Personally, I believe it is as deep as the manual ground balance machines. The grounds that I hunt are moderately mineralized. The Conquistador is usually the first machine that I pick up to hunt with. I also own a Tejon and a Cibola. I find that the fewer controls that a machine has, the more fun I have with it. These machines are in the 10 kilohertz range, perfect in my opinion for general detecting. Tesoros are hard to beat! If Tesoro switches to digital technology in the future, you can expect older analog machines to increase in price, or you just won't find them for sale.

As for the headphones, you get what you pay for. Cheaper headphones allow too many outside noises to interfere (wind, cars, kids playing, etc). Headphones are probably the best accessory that you can buy, next would be smaller coils for the trash infested areas. I use the Gray Ghosts, and love them for their quality build and the sound that they produce.

The bottom line here: Tesoro is still the best in my book!

Sure is good to be back with you folks on the Tesoro side of the forum. I like the no b.s. and tell it the way it is here. I haven't been hanging around here lately because I didn't feel like I should because I wasn't using a Tesoro at the time. I really missed all you people, even you Monte. Just kidding Monte, you know that I look up to you and admire your knowledge and how you put things into words anyone can understand. As for the headphones I got (Jolly Rogers) they are made by DetectPro that makes Gray Ghost so they should be good ones. At least better than I have ever had. Ok boy & girls you can bet I be hanging around and might even have a question or two for you from time to time. Happy Holidays! Steve.
