New to me MXT

I have visited over here but never really posted. I have been using an xterra of some sort for the last few years but have always wanted to try a MXT. I have to say they are a really good detector. I have been playing around in my yard for a couple of weeks but finally took it on a three hour relic hunt today. I am not going to make up a bunch of stuff and say I like it better than my xterra, because I have been using xterras for years. If I had used my MXT that long I might like it better. But I will say I like some things a lot better. The pinpoint is way better, balance is better even though it is heavier. It seems to do better in trash also. They are both really good detectors. Depth seems to be pretty close also. I think that these people that bash the other have never really gave one or the other a fair try. I bought it to try and sale but after using it today I would like to keep it. If it had tones like the pro I would keep it. I am just a tone guy since my hearing isn't very good. I like them both and they both have there place. I found several bullets today most being shot 69 caliper and one square piece.

Nice finds, I like those huge bullets. That's larger than any I have found. The square piece of lead could have possibly been remains of lead purchased just to make their own bullets. I understand it was sold in random chunks, hand poured bullion or scrap pieces and just weighed on a scale when purchased.

Now the interesting part,
The U.M.C. Co. New Club dates from approx 1873 to 1911. Prior to that, they were full brass casings. Yours just happens to be an 18 gauge and is very rare and one of the hardest to find shotgun shells. I have lots of these IN ALL BUT 18 GAUGE. It may not hold much value in its condition but non the less it is still very rare. Congrats!

Soem great find there. There are not any civil war relics in CA that I know of but there are some relics to be found from the early Spanish and Mexican colonys.

I have the MXT Pro and like the tones feature also. There is a way to get the MXT Pro tones in the Relic mode. Just set up the detector for C&J mode with tones enabled and then switch to relic mode. The tones stay in effect unless you touch the buttons on the pod. To ground balance don't do the ground grad button or you get right back into the standard relics tones just use the ground toggle switch on the box. After ground balancing I usually put the switch in the lock position and every once in a while toggle to the ground track since the MXT remembers the latest ground conditions and it will apply the newest ground readings by flipping the switch.

I usually use the relic mode and 2-tones for hunting both coins and relics. The relic mode has a slower self-adjusting threshold and runs smoother. The C&J mode is more sensitive to low condutors (gold, lead, pewter, etc). The relic mode seems to better find the deep coins in a iron littered area.

I've never used an XTerra do I can't comment on the merits or differences. I have used the Minelab SD2200 and would like to get the GP 5000 since I live an CA and like to go nugget hunting with my MXT.

I can not comment on coin hunting as I have not took it to do that yet. But in the relic field it is a good detector.

Good job on finding those minie balls ..... CW lead is my favorite ! CCH

Great finds. Keep swinging that MXT and you'll be having a pocket full of finds.
