Hi everyone,

I just bought a Bounty Hunter Lone Star. So far I'm pretty hapy with it. I can't complain I'm still learning & getting used to it. I was wondering what your thoughts are on this detector.

Thanks a bunch.

I believe the Lone Star is about the same as the Pioneer 101??? It is a great starter machine, and will find coins up to about 6" reliably, but I have heard of folks digging coins 8-9" deep with it. It will find larger objects at up to 2' deep. Depending on your soil conditions in your area, you want to set the SENS as high as you can without getting constant chatter from the machine (especially when it is NOT in motion). Keep your DISC knob no higher than the 9 o'clock position, or your going to miss nickels and small gold...GET the 4" coil if it did not come with the machine...it is a killer in trashy areas, and around metal poles (tot lots, fences). keep your swing speed slow and steady and even with the ground (you should be able to count 2 mississippi from end to end of swing)...No golf swings (lifting coil at ends of sweeps). DIG ALL repeatable signals to start, until your familliar with what the machine is telling you...Do not be afraid to experiment with settings or your swing speed...you will always learn something new...DO find a local club and join if one is in your area. Much help can be had from them.
Welcome to the Addiction, and hope to see many finds from you...

Happy Hunting,

gygull, I've had the lone star for a year, and it has served me well. The biggest challenge for me was learning to accurately pinpoint, but I've since refined my skills in this area. I use mine mostly for coin shooting, and so I have the 4 inch coil (in addition to the 8 inch stock), and use it alot. Like Gopher said, it pulls the coins out of trashy parks, schoolyards, and similar places. It also makes pinpointing a snap. As far as settings are concerned, I usually start out in all metal mode, with the disc. nob completely counterclockwise, and the sensitivity at 3 o'clk. If there are a lot of iron or other junk signals, I just switch over to disc. mode. Just keep experimenting and get to know your machine. Happy Hunting, abcoin.

Thanks a bunch for the info. I'm finding that I'm having trouble with pinpointing, but I'm determined to get the hang of it.
Thanks again,
gygull

Headphones help tremendouly with pinpointing (narrows the area, due to lack of audio lag due to traveling through amplifiers and air to reach your ears), and saves your batteries (less amps to power headphones than to power an amplifier and speakers)...
