New to MD

This is a great place to learn. I am in the process of reading the forum all the way back. From what I see I will probably purchase either a Tesoro an Ace 250. to start out with. I make and play Native American style flutes as one of my hobbies. All the gadgets $$$$ don't bring finds it is knowing your MD and experience that counts is what I am finding out from you all. Brings to mind what an old Indian said to the newbe when asked what flute to get and which was the best. He answered why the one you have. Also brings to mind the story told about an old beat up violin at an auction was not bringing much till the old man took it up. The touch of the masters hand brought it to life. I will continue to read and learn when I get mine I'll be back with some finds. I am called "LittleOldMan"

Both are good machines. The 250 has a ton of features for little money. There is a reason they are the best selling machines. In the hands of a pro can sing a pretty song.

Welcome to a fun and exciting hobby, littleoldman. It would seem you have already learned a lot about detecting without yet making your first swing with a detector. Good luck and HH jim tn

I've had people tell me that Bounty hunters are junk, but while trying to find some rail spikes on an old traction line I hit a tone and dug it. It turned out to be a 22 cal. slug (the lead part) at around 4 inches. I found the casing at 2 inches. I don't think that's to junky. I've watched some guys use more costly detectors and it seems to me, they don't swing the head to cover the ground. They swing in more of a forward triangle than a half circle. They don't find too much, at least not while I'm watching. Of course, I'm retired now, so I'm not in a hurry at anything I do. I'll just keep my QD2 & tracker IV. I can't afford those thousand dollar wonders. I still have fun though.

Welcome to the site. You are looking at 2 very nice detectors. You did not say which Tesoro you were looking at but they make great units. The ACE is a sweet machine also. Good luck to you with either one. Oh and you are right learn your machine and you will do just fine, Beale.

I have a 250....Coming up on my one year anniversary of it's purchase.
Very nice machine.
I however find that I seldom look at the screen when I get a signal. Older eyes sometimes just can't see what the display is doing.
If you absolutely believe you will have the need to check the screen then the 250 is a great choice.
I can see myself using a non vdi tesoro as I just go by the sounds of the machine should I need to buy a second unit..

You picked two of many very good machines. And yes, the Bounty Hunter is one of them-although mine has a very plastic quality-I still try it on occasion. Since you have the ear for sounds, the Golden umax by Tesoro may interest you. It has a multiple cacophony of sounds as an AID to what the target may be. Many do not like it's variety tones-but your love for the flute just made me think of it first. Otherwise, there are many others at reasonable prices.

Golden uMax, tones, and a flute player? Interesting possibilities when ears are trained to listen to the tones of a flute..It would be interesting to see how many GUM users play musical instruments, their opinion of the detector, as compared to those who don't play ..In the late 70's there was a "fad "detector? that had tones all over the place..Most of the people that jump from detector to detector (,in the eternal quest), soon gave up..One individual who played in a band, symphony(?) kept his long after they went out of style. He claimed it talked to him...I would like a detector that gave only two signals....DIG......NO DIG......Cordially Nad.

Thank you all for your comments of support. I am a history buff. I live in north central Al. Make my living as a debit Insurance agent. I cover an area of about 1000 sq miles. Many, many areas of interest. Still have access to my family's original homestead from around 1814. I had not thought about the tonal identities of the MD as I have only heard one once. My ear just may be an advantage. Again thanks much y'all be hearing from me after a while. "LOM"
