Hi I live in Goodyear Arizona and im interested in trying to find some places to hunt close to home any suggestions for areas to hunt in the west valley? any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Welcome mertz. Try to find places where people have gathered over a long period of time. Places like school yards, play grounds, parks, beaches and old homesteads and foundations. Remeber to know your local laws regarding detecting and always get permission to hunt private property and above all practice good technique in digging and filling your holes. This is a great place to ask questions and learn. Happy Hunting. Matt

From 1996 up to 2005, I drove long haul flatbed truck and was down in and through your area many times. I recall the Tomahawk Truck Stop west of you at exit 45 off the I-10. To the south of their facilities, there was a vacant dirt area that many trucks would go off and park in alone, even I did it to get away from others and noise. I would think there would be a possibility of finding who knows what there. I seem to recall there was some old concrete buried enough you could drive over it but may have been remnants of old building foundations. I only knew of this location as just being exit 45 but it apparently has the location name of Salome Arizona. I have no idea who owns the vacant land next to the truck stop or if after I got out of truck driving, it could have been fenced off or closed to keep people from using and or parking there. I would have a hunch, this location goes back some considerable years of use and may pay off to research it. If it is not fenced or Posted, I suspect there would be no harm in detecting it but the best is to respect property owners and ask for permission first. Who knows, maybe the truck stop owns it and is why trucks used it as over-flow parking. I've even seen RV'ers use it. In the Link below, scroll down and it has a satellite picture of the place. I see a New truck stop was built north of the Tomahawk on the other side of the I-10. Exit 94 I recall had some sort of truck stop but I never stopped there. I see now in the satellite image, a new one was built and I think closer to I-10. What I remembered was more distant from I-10 and looked to have a dirt parking area. The old truck stops I remember mostly had dirt parking areas and seems only in the last years with those who are still in business, more and more are paving them which will cover a great many old and lost items. If I was in your area, I would also look along the old two lane roads like AZ 72 up through Vicksburg and to Parker for old dirt turn outs but be careful about being on the Colorado Indian Reservation in the Parker area. Roads like this one have been around for ages and travelers truck or car, are always having to stop for something or another along the way. Even at Bouse on the way to Parker, unless they have been removed and or has been paved, there was a small dirt turn out to stop and read the Historical Signs. After Parker on the California side of the river where the road T's, I remember right there on the other side of the road, an empty dirt area that I think once had an old gas station or something but is on the Reservation. Never having lived or having ever detected in Arizona, these were the first to come to mind having been in and through your area and may be close enough for you. I know if I were down there, I would consider it. My metal detecting has for the greatest part in Idaho, been on Public Lands or highway right of ways.
