Got a Excab 1000. I live in Dania beach Florida.I hope to get any help on in the water searching help...read some books but real help by pro's is much better.
Any help or advice would be priceless.
thanks

Your machine is only as good as you are and the more time you put into it the better it will perform.

Hey Dcat! First off welcome to what will be an addicting hobby. Im relatively new as well. I have only been detecting about 2 and a half weeks now (in that time however I have managed to find a nice gold ring and a few nice pieces of silver jewelry (photos to come guys). I also started with an Excal and I love it. The guys couldnt be more right when they tell you...practice, practice, practice. Do yourself a favor and take your trash and a few valuables out in your yard and listen to the different tones (I put my valuables on pieces of paper). Listen to everything and try to remember what it sounds like b4 you dig. Make a guess and then dig. Soon you will start to know what is there b4 your get it out of the ground but, I say dig everything anyway. If its trash...it doesnt belong there, if it's treasure it belongs in my pocket! :p Good luck and good hunting, I know you'll do great! -Dig

When you get there study it intently. I printed out EVERY story that Norm put on the website for fear of it being taken down someday.

Norm was a great detectorist. He passed away some time ago and his family/friends keep the sight up in his honor. I repeat; read it and study it. I am land-locked here in Arkansas. But if I lived on or near the salt-water beach areas, this would be my technical bible, bud.

You have the best machine so do your homework with golden olde and then put the coil into the water and sand and go have a BUNCH of fun. <><

When I moved from the drysand into the water I invested in the best all around underwater detector I could buy, The Excal 1000! Now you just have to learn this great detector and where and when to use it. The goldenolde.com is an excellent start but nothing beats experience. Check the older posts on this forum and others as a lot of us will not only show our finds but more importantly where, when and how we found them. Surf Pirating is an art that is governed by science but each of us has our own techniques depending upon where and when we are hunting.
Nothing beats experience so get out there and start swinging, then check your results against what others are doing and how they're doing it. I have 1,000 hours on my Excal and I'm still learning new and better ways to pirate the surf. We'll give you feedback based on your input, otherwise where de we start but with the basics and the goldenolde.com already covers that topic.

Cheers,

BDA:cool:

I agree that "The Golden Olde" is the web site to go to. It can be found at http://www.thegoldenolde.com/

I used to converse with Norm through emails. I sure do miss his expertise. The family has sold the website and no loger maintain it. Norm is the only person that handled the web site. That's why you won't see any pictures of Norm on the main pages. I've written to the fellow that bought the site and he too likes what Norm has done. I don't believe that he is going to update the site in any way. It's just going to remain the way Norm left it with all its information in tact for all others to enjoy.
