Howdy All! I am new to this forum. I have been waiting for my new E-trac that has been on backorder for about 4 weeks now and should arrive tomorrow. I found this forum while looking for information on it, and it sure looked like a friendly place. I have been detecting on and off for decades, with a hiatus about the last 5-6 years. I have owned Bounty's, several White's, and now after reading all the rave reviews, and sparking my interest in the hobby again, " the Minelab E-trac! " I have been following this forum and downloaded the zip-files for the emulator and have been using it to get myself acclimated with the new machine which will ease the transition from the White's. Do you have any "fresh out of the box" suggestions for me when it arrives tomorrow? Thanks All, BSC

I'm going to guess that from your "handle" you live up in Montana. My first suggestion is send the machine back, for if you've been following this forum, MontanaGold has already cleaned your state out:nopity::laugh:!! Nah!! Have fun with it. Your not new to detecting so thats a plus. Play around with the audio settings until you get what pleases your ears...Threshold pitch and volume. How much gain you prefer and so on. You've probably already have a coin garden, so I would spend a little time there. If you use the default coin program you'll need to open up 01/42 - 45 or 46 or whereever silver dollar coins may come in. I think there is a sticky on the TDI numbers up above. Don't be afraid to dig up some weird signals. The other day I dug up a dateless buffalo only out of curiosity. The numbers did "sometimes" go to a nickel reading, but the sound was just weird, so I dug. I didn't film that one and am kicking myself for not doing so (darn batteries were low). Please chime in with your questions and any advice you have.

Take care and HH!

There's a lot of experienced people in this forum that will be happy to help you with the learning curve - ( I'm not one of them ) !
I know I sure learned a lot from this forum across the last 8 months !

I'll just pass along what everyone told me ...

( 1 ) - Read the factory manual & Andy's book - over and over again.
( 2 ) - Use factory programs till you get a little more familiar with your machine.
( 3 ) - Spend as much time in the field as possible using the machine - things will start to fall into place a little at a time. At approx. 100 hrs. - I started getting "tuned in" to the machine.
( 4 ) - Something I found helped me a lot --- I keep a little pocket note book with me and write down the target ID's I've dug - ( good and bad ) - till I have them memorized.

Good luck with your new E-Trac ! --- Mark

I'm afraid all I can offer is to practice, practice, and have fun doing it! :)

Oh yea, ask questions here!

Howdy All.. Thanks for the advice everyone. Well the new machine showed up late today, I assembled it and loaded the battery pack while the NiHM's were charging. Got about an hour in this evening. I found a few memorial pennies, and a blob of melted metal that had a solid 12-45 hit at about 6 inches. Thought for sure I had found my first silver with the E-trac, surprised me when I scraped it clean with my knife.... brass. Oh well... theres this learnin' curve, and theres always tomorrow, and the next day and ....... Thanks again all! BSC
