Hey guys, I just picked up a used sovereign elite recently to replace the famous trails detector I was using. It was a terrible MD to learn on and after reading here for a bit I was sold on the sovereign, that, and a guy locally was conveniently selling one lol. My questions are can you pick up the rear box mount for the shaft as mine did not have it, and the black chest mount bag anywhere. I been out a few times now with it to spots I hit with the famous trails, and man it was like I was never there before. Granted I only found junk, but tons of it the other one never picked up, and I was excited every dig. I hear you guys say about using the edge of the coil to help PP sometimes. What do you mean by this technique, like tipping the coil sideways on edge, or just getting the edge of the coil close to the potential target? Haven't got my first coin yet but the thrill of it so far is awesome.

Dig4Glory;
Welcome to the forum. You have a good machine there. It has a learning curve. Like learning how to fish.
Good luck.

Dig4Glory,welcome,you could take and drill the rivets out and mount in place to the back yourself.Usually a trip to the hardware store and a couple of bucks.My suggestion go to your local Army Navy resale store and buy an old medic bag and hip mount or wear around your neck.No coins yet really!!Just one time,go out to a clean park and crank that discriminate knob to the max and search for an hour you'll find a few coins.On you tube I've seen them use the edge of the coil to pinpoint with an Explorer never seen Sovereign users do this.Good Luck and Happy Trails uh Happy Hunting

Hi,

I'm glad you are enthused so much. You have an awesome machine and have to have patience and be persistant with it. As far as pinpointing goes, throw a dime or quarter on the ground and go over it with the coil. You'll hear it and go sideways with the coil and back it up. Do a couple of inches or less wiggle sideways back and forth. When the signal stops you should see the coin in front of the coil. Then move it forward and you will see where the coin will be under the front of your coil. Practice this and it will come easy to imagine where the coin will be under the ground. The sovereigns don't have a depth meter but the loudness of the signal will let you know if it's a surface target or deeper target. To make your life a lot easier digging up coins you need to get yourself a Sunray s-1 probe, and it will save you so much time digging targets. The probe will use your same tones from the Elite and will reach out up to 3.5 inches. When you are digging a 6 inch hole, the probe will save you a bunch of time finding the target. The louder it gets the closer you are. You can get s-1 probes on here used for around 125.00 They cost around 180 new. It will pay for itself with the time saved digging. I'm also partial to the Sunray dti 2 or 3 meter. They are very accurate on the coin numbers to keep you from digging trash and saving more time. They aren't made anymore but you can probably pick up a used one on here for 125.00 They have a nice chart on them showing the numbers for coins and gold, etc. Read the posts on this forum and you will learn a lot. If you have questions ask them. Somebody will help you..Cya-Mark

Thanks guys, yeah I have been sticking to the fields as of yet. lot's of pull tabs, nails, and junk. I keep it in all metal with the sens all the way up. I don't mind digging everything, good workout anyhow. Ron, funny you say that I was at a army surplus other day getting a fold up shovel and was eying the bags. I just liked the look and exact fit of the ML bag. Thanks mark, my next purchase will be a probe, as I've seen how easy they make it PP once in the hole. Passing the detector over doesn't tell me much other than it's still there somewhere. I've learned heaps from you guys already, looking forward to more success. thanks mike

Hey Dig4glory, welcome to the forum. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by using the edge of the coil but I'll take a shot. After you find a target wiggle the coil just over the target and move it slowly back toward's you. When you lose the target the target will be just slightly in front of the coil or off the "edge" about a half inch. Make a visual reference on the ground to where you think it is and rotate 90 degrees and do it again. Where your imaginary lines cross will be where your target is.

Gary, that was exactly what I was asking about. I just figured you had to always center the target in the middle of the coil. I'm going to practice what you and mark are saying on that technique thnx

Hey Dig4glory. I think I should just clarify a little on what I said in the other post. When you wiggle the coil over your target the center of the coil will be the loudest and you are right you need to center the target in the center of the coil before you move the coil back toward's you.
Have fun gary

10-4 I got it, and have tried a few times on lawn with it. will help out in hunting for sure thanks mike
