Hello all,

I'm from WV, been metal detecting off and on for a couple years and bought a X-terra 705 last fall. With the weather, haven't hunted as much as i'd like
When i bought it, my husband told me to buy a prospecting coil, which i never expected to use so it's been sitting in the box unopened. But i got it out tonight and hooked it up, just to see if it would detect other metals besides gold....and it does. This is a DD coil, about 10.5 x 5 or 6 wide. Has anyone used one and found it to have any advantages over the stock concentric coil? I mainly search for coins. Thanks for any help, and it's nice to find a section on here for X-terras.

Welcome to the X-TERRA forum. There are lots of great folks on here who will be able to help you better understand your detector and the differences in the coils. I recently wrote an article I called Understanding the X-TERRA, and placed it at the top of these posts. There is quite a bit of information in there that might help get you started. As well, the FAQFAQ section has several posts concerning the coil differences. And, by using the Search function, you can find past posts concerning just about anything concerning the X-TERRA that you can imagine. HH Randy

Hello Randy,

Thanks for the welcome and the information leads. Actually i was reading that article at the top of the page. That is what made me think of the prospecting coil i had stashed in the basement. Believe me, i'll be studying that article in depth. It's great, i just have do a little at a time to comprehend it all. I was wondering if this prospecting coil that i already have is one of the ones you are talking about there and if it would be useful for hunting coins.

I've already learned some things from the article, about tones and sensitivity that i didn't know and plan to study it even more. Thanks for sharing it.

Now, does anyone use the prospecting coil for coins?

I just got a Garrett propointer and can't wait to use it maybe i can bet by with smaller holes and find more targets.

I use the 5X10 high frequency coil in the coin & treasure mode for coin shooting in my trash ridden parks and it works great. It really helps getting into tight places between the trash to pick out the good signals. I would highly recommend you read Diggers post of August 8, 2007 entitled Ever wonder what you're missing? Believe me you will be glad you did when you hit the parks. Good hunting. Nampa 23

Thank you for the reply, Nampa. Sure glad to have found this forum. See, i thought that 5 x 10 was for nuggets only. I'm going to read everything i can on here. I'll look for the post you mentioned now.

I use the 6 inch dd 18.75 khz coil and that is one of my favorite coils to use . The 5 x 10 works the same way except diffeerent size. Welcome to the forum , stick around and let us know what you find.

Welcome to the site. So far all I use is the stock coil. I am in the process of saving my $$ for a 3Khz, Beale.
