Hi all. Been visiting forum for a little while and enjoy the posts.
I have a question. Started detecting about 20 years ago. Bought White's Coinmaster 4000D Series 2. Used it a few years the got out of hobby until this summer. So far about 800 coins (no silver, 1 gold ring, 1 silver ring and a handful of junk rings.
I am looking to get new detector and would like some input. I live in northern Oh. 80% of time coinshooting the other 20% relic. I hunt schools, parks and old home sites as well as construction when I can find it.
In the $400-$600 range can anyone give me thoughts on the following detectors and what would be best for coinshooting and a little relic hunting. Advantages one over the others.
IDX Pro
PRO XL
Prism IV
ID EXCEL
1270
1236-X2
Sovereign Elite
Thanks!

It looks as if you did your homework.
All are good units and I am using the XL PRO.
As you may know the 6000 have a good track record.
I also have a Fisher 1266X and the new White Prizm detector.I used most of the top units and I still love my no computer raw power XL PRO the best.
I can set that beast up faster the XLT or DFX and can find coins as deep.THe XL PRO with a bigfoot coil is hard to stop at a kiddie sand box.
Many coils are made for the XLPRO from 3" to 15+.
YOU can look at firstontop.com to see some of coins, rings etc I found. The best info I can give you is to play with some units and you will find one that feels good to you.Hope this helps

I hate to complicate your search, but I would definitely add the brand new Garrett GTP 1350 to my possibles list. I haven't tried it yet, but it sounds great and is right there in your price range. Review is in the latest Lost Treasure magazine. HB

Of the list you have given I would choose the XL PRO or the Soverign... 3rd choice the Excel ID.
You can't beat the solid ID of the XL PRO... it is awesome and pretty easy to use with very resectable depth and a quality product.However... the fast sweep requiered to get max depth can be tough to do in the woods or tall grass... BUt its great to cover alot of ground in a park or lawns.
The Soverign is a machine I am just learning to use... but I'm very impressed with it. I like the slow sweep speed for working trashy area's and it is certainly a deep seeker, Looks to be easy to use. I'm still learning the little tricks and quirks that all machines have. Love the Tone ID.
Now the Excel ID... For coinshooting Parks and lawns it is tough to beat. Very smooth in the trash (no clicks and pops). Great ID and respectable depth. Litewieght and lifetime war. Great Value for dollars spent. Downside is coil selection... there are none.
Feel free to write if I can help with your selection.

I was in the same boat you were. I was in the hobby many years back, had a compass, two garrets, and a whites coin master.
I bought a Sovereign elite. I cannot say how impressed with the machine I am. I was use to the difficult machines a few years back so the "learning curve" on this machine for me was short. You will find silver with this machine. I have 4 barber coins from this spring alone. I do not detect much in the summer, so I am just getting ready to start in the fall, [do not like digging in dry ground] I have been working fresh water beaches in my area though have made a few good ring finds. Also if you think you will ever take your machine to a salt water beach [ever] this is the machine. I first bought my maching this winter and took it to mexico on vacation, knew another person there who has a whites, all I can say is I out worked him with a machine that he owned for 6 years, and the first time I used it was on vacation also he could not touch the depth I was getting.
PS the "Iron out feature" is great you will rarely ever dig anything that is iron.
