New to Forum and ordered AT Gold

Hello all, I am new to the forum here. I ordered my AT Gold last night, and am looking forward the the new machine coming sometime this week. I have done some detecting over the last few years with a Tersoro Cibola. I have enjoyed the Cibola, but really wanted something with a display and more than one tone.

Any helpful hints on the AT Gold? I have read through the manual twice, and watched all the videos Garrett has put up on their page, but I am sure you all have some hints or tricks to the machine that you have found.

Thanks in advance!

Jason

AT's are pretty easy turn on and go..let us know a little more about what you intend to use your new machine for...

Yeah Mud, it seems straight forward on things. I have been hunting two or three spots, beach area for coins and lost items, an old community building, and a friends farm once or twice. Mostly looking for coins, dropped goodies at the beach, and maybe some relic stuff.

Ok, so a general all around hunter of things metallic and possibly valuable then..good, you should really like it...I have the ATPro, it has been a good friend to me for this type of hunting.

Learn to pinpoint. It took me some effort. Shallow targets can mess with you until you learn. The heel or toe method is a good one. One technique I use in PP mode in high trash is to hold the coil over the target a few inches then toggle the PP button to detune it.

Thanks guys. One question I have for those that shoot coins, if you use the Disc 2 setting, does it not pick up nickels? My buddy has a Fisher F2 that coin huntes pretty good, but he disc's tabs out, and doesn't find nickels at all. I know that happens a lot if you disc. tabs, but just wondering if the AT Gold is a little better a seperating the two?

Jason

Much better than an F2, you're going to eat him alive!! Nickles will give you a 52-53 VDI and a single mid tone. A square tab will give you a 54-56 and have a double beep mid-tone, at least for the most part. Where you will destroy him will be with the target separation you will get with the 5 x 8 DD coil. Once you get proficient, you will be hitting good targets lying next to bad ones that will be masked to him. Good luck and good hunting!!

Thanks BigCat, That is what I hoped the AT gold would give me. Coming from my Cibolo, I really wanted something that I could start identifying stuff by VID and Tones, instead of rolling the Disc knob to get a close idea of what the target is.

Build a test garden, and you will learn your detector much faster.

You will learn more about your metal detector in one hour in your test garden, then 10 hours in the field. Why? Because you will learn how a particular object will sound on your metal detector in real conditions in your dirt at home. And.......once you learn your your metal detector with your known targets in your own dirt, you can easily see how another detector will work in your own dirt. Having someone tell you that brand X detector gets 10 inches on a quarter means nothing to you, as it just depends on the type of dirt the target is being detected in. The common misconception that that someone will tell you about their metal detector is that it gets 10 inches on a dime. Well, that all depends on type of soil, mineralization of soil, humidity in soil, orientation of target to soil, size of dime, silver or clad dime, oxidation on dime coil size, detector settings and so on. etc. What might be important to you is how deep that dime will read in YOUR soil. And depth alone shouldn't be the #1 reason for buying a detector either. Target separation is important also, especially in junky areas. A larger coil with added depth will actually work against you in a lot of these circumstances. Having the ability to ground balance a metal detector is also important, especially if it can be ground balanced to salt water. OK....enough of the confusing stuff.

Setting up a test garden is quite simple.....find a piece of dirt in your own back yard, or a small area in a park or off the beaten path where someone is not likely to metal detect. If you don't own a house, a relative or friend will probably let you use their property. You are not ruining anything for that matter. Grab some clad coins, some silver coins, copper coins, common and beaver tail pull tabs and some nails. These will be your known targets which will be planted with known depths. But before you bury anything, grab your AT pro in pro mode, zero discrimination and remove all junk from the areas to be used as a test bed. All cleaned up? Great!

Next, bury various targets at various depths, with the least amount of damage to the grass. Get a ruler and measure the actual (preferred) depth of your targets. make sure the target is laying horizontal. Fill in the hole. PLEASE make a detailed drawing of your test garden and make spare copies. Our memory will fail us over time. That test garden is built to teach you how the metal detector works at a KNOWN target, not a guessed one.

You can refer to this garden every time you buy a new coil, think there is something wrong with your metal detector, experimenting with super tuning your metal detector for low or high conductivity targets (gold or silver) or just comparing different brands.

Below is my own test garden at home, with all information written in the 1" x 2" board, for simplicity. When using the test garden, I just line up the ends of the 1" x 2" with a mark on the fire pit brick and a shallow penny at the far end. But, you can do things differently, get creative and go in a different direction. Once complete, spend some time with your AT Pro in that new test garden.. Listen to the audio in Pro and Standard Mode. Look at the digital numbers for each target. Try different swing speeds, at different heights. Start remembering the common patterns. See if the guy across town who brags that his detector can get 20" in the dirt on a dime is really being honest.

You will really feel confident with your AT Pro the next time you get out in the field. Good luck and I hope some great targets come your way.

Really like the test garden idea, that I will need to do as I am waiting to get my first detector soon.

Thanks John, I would love to setup a coin garden and would have a couple years ago, but I live in an apartment. They would not allow be to set one up, so I am kinda out of luck. My buddy that is just starting out wants to set one up, so I will be helping him and in turn have a place to test soon. I like you lay out and will do something very similar at his house. Thanks for the info!

JRyno, What did you order?

If you disc out pull tabs you run the risk of missing nickels and gold. You need to get a selection of different types and sizes of pull tabs, throw them on the ground and detect them. After a while you will know what is a nickel, gold r a pull tab. Its really pretty easy once you practice for a while.

Thanks Sparkster, I know it is difficult to explain, but how would you characterize the difference in tones? I plan to set up a temp test garden in some sand around the volleyball net this evening and try this. When I air tested the different items I am not sure I really heard a difference.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum and I hope you enjoy your AT Gold detector. I'm still learning my AT/Pro and still having some trouble pinpointing with my coil especially when multiple targets are together. But, it's slowly coming together for me and I hope you enjoy your AT Gold and the challenge of learning a new detector. Good luck and happy hunting.

Thanks Fongu, I am loving the detector so far! Just got back from playing out in the volleyball pit. Got 4 lincolns and a quarter. I also did some test coins and a tab, still not really hearing the difference, but can see it in the ID. Pin pointing is coming along. I am not sure where the sweet spot is on this coil yet, it is either the first hole in front of where the coil attaches to the arm or right under the arm. Maybe someone can just in on that for us?
