New to Forum and Metal Detecting

Hello to all......I am new to this forum, metal detecting and treasure hunting. I recently purchased a Bounty Hunter Fortune Hunter. If you have any input on this particular model, tips, tricks or whatever I would appreciate them. I also just bought an American Hawk Deep Sea (HP1029) on e-bay new for $100. I am starting this as a hobby and hoping to eventually move into the field on a full time basis. I have been out of work for over twenty months, since my company closed operations here in Southern California and moved to Georgia. I was a production supervisor for eleven years. I am starting to think that no matter what anyone says, there is still age discrimination out there. I've worked since I was twelve and never been out of work for more than a week or so.....Twenty months is unbelievable. I am fifty eight. I don't expect to get rich but maybe turn some supplemental income to offset expenses until I can find a "REAL" job. I live in Southern California and I know there are some fairly good sites locally, not to mention the beaches. I live about eighty miles from the nearest beach and am closer to the deserts. Anyway....Any advice, information or help you could render would be appreciated. From what I've read, I must be pretty lucky. Even though it is raining here the temperature has been in the fifties, sixties and even the eighties in the last month. I grew up in the Midwest so I know what it is like to be snow bound.........I'm a Vietnam vet, like to hear from other vets regardless of which war or conflict you were in......Thanks TraderTed ......

Welcome to the forum! Read the old posts for a ton of good info. I'm not sure which BH model you have, probably similar to the Tracker IV? Someone here knows, no doubt!

Set up a test patch in your yard. Find a spot with no signals or dig them up to make a clear spot. Now toss down some common coins, trash items and jewelry. Check them together and separately to get an idea of the tones you will hear and how to dicriminate out the junk but keep the good stuff.

Good luck!
