New to F75 I don't understand something??

I have been trying to learn my new F75 and have a question. I taped a dime, quarter and a nickle to a piece of cardboard about 3" apart and turned it upside down on the ground. I ground balanced and set it at disc-6 sens-80 and 3 tones, no notch. When I sweep the the coil along the line of the 3 coins i get nothing, no sound, maybe a little bleep every now and then. If i lower the coil to about 2" I get signals. When I sweep the coil across the coins i get good signals at 10 to 12". I don't understand why there is nothing going down the line of the coins? It doesn't matter how fast I sweep down the line, there is nothing until I get to within about 2". This doesn't make sense, I thought speed was that the F75 was good at. Is there something wrong, I wouldn't think that is how it should respond. Thanks for any help, Randy

Ok, I removed the cardboard and checked the ground and it was clean. I still can't get a signal going down the line in disc mode above 2", but when I switched to all metal I get a signal at 12" going both down the line and going across the coins. Is there something wrong with my disc mode?

I've posted similar issues before on another forum and been beat-up pretty good for it. The truth is the truth though and that's where we should aim.

This machine is outstanding when you can operate without discrimination, but if you have enough EMI that it's necessary to stay in the "DE" range of discrim, it has deficiencies. The disappointment I had is inner-city parks and home sites all have that much EMI. Hopefully the next Fisher will allow you to stick with the "DE" circuitry in discrimination mode. When this one can be operated at '0' disc, JE, 4-tone it's like having x-ray vision - I'm not kidding.

Try your test again but run at 0" disc and just let it go crazy - you'll still hear the coins through the barrage of tones even though your TID is unusable. It will still only be around 6" (put the small coil on and you'll get all three up to about 8"). What this meant to me (and I could be wrong of course) is that some type of nulling is occurring because of EMI. Someone PM'd me last year to tell me that the ground must have flecks of iron or deep nuisance targets causing it to do poorly in this test - so I tried it on a board on top of two 5 gallon buckets - same results. The F75 will do a bit better in all of these tests if you put the coins at different heights (simulating more realistic conditions). Single tone and all metal give much better performance, but I have an issue swinging a $1000 beep-dig machine when there are discriminators in my arsenal.

My supposedly super slow Explorer II didn't identify all of these targets independently but gave an excellent diggable signal (using the minelab wiggle) on the quarter up to about 9" - once the quarter was removed the dime was easy to find at about 6". The nickle I would normally leave in the ground. My infield experience with the Explorer is that I can get those targets deeper in the ground. I already know many people disagree with that statement vehemently, but I believe that something is different with the Exporer line and in-ground performance. I don't even care "why" - I'm just happy its the case

Randy make sure your coil connector is tight . Try a machine reset. Try fresh batteries . Try a different coil if you can .
Or there could be a problem with your machine . Only once was EMI so bad i could not detect and that was last week .
After 10 minutes hunting i realized thy had a electric dog fence . I mostly hunt disc 0 - 6 with sens 75 - 95 Good Luck Mike

Ok, I did a machine reset and checked the coil connection, ground balanced and get almost the same results. The batteries are new copper tops. Now if I am sweeping down the line of coins at about 10" I sometimes get a signal in 1 direction but not the other. If I lower the sweep anywhere from 4 to 8" I get nothing, but an occasional bleep. I set the disc to 0 and can hear signals both ways. In all metal i get a good signal both ways. So i took the nickle out of the mix and it works perfect. I then put a zinc penny where the nickle was and it works perfect. It seems that when the nickle is in the mix it doesn't work. I know this is not a real world situation but it is making me nuts. My setting are sens = 80, disc = 6, no notch, 3 tones, de mode

It sounds like it is broken if you have to do all of that to try and get it to work is that what you got a detector for? It may be a bad coil..I have had no problems with my F75 other then EMI

My first thought was that perhaps you had been "playing" with notch some and maybe had actually notched good targets out. Doing a reset, though, would have corrected that. I don't understand the situation by taking the nickel out of the mix and the detecter then hitting all targets. Will it hit the nickel by itself? The F 75 is a great nickel machine...as good as the cz's and that is saying something. With the settings you are using, is the detector pretty stable when just holding it out in front of you? I have hunted some pretty tough EMI ground with my F 75 and while I knew I was loosing some depth, I was still able to detect the shallower good targets. If you are hitting the other targets o.k., it doesn,t really sound like the coil is a problem. Take it out in the real world and see what happens and good luck. HH jim tn

I put a nickel, dime and quarter 3" apart on clean ground and laid a piece of cardboard on top of the coins and used the same settings. My F 75 hit all 3 coins just a hair above the cardboard all the way up to about 10." Interesting, though, the nickel and quarter was the the dominate hits. The quarter being so dominate that I had to watch the screen to see a brief dime reading. The nickel also id'ed as foil and gave a mid tone in tone setting 3h. The coins are so close together that basically I got a mid tone, high tone, in about the width of the coil at all coil distances up to 10" or so. HH jim tn

I went and bought a new set of batteries and get the same results. I found a piece of ground with no EMI and nothing in the ground. Sweeping across the bare ground there is no sound, so I assume it is clean. When I lay the cardboard down with the coins on it get a signal most of the time going one direction but nothing going the other direction. I tried different speeds, with the same results. When I do get a sound and watch the id i only get one number. If i turn the cardboard where the nickle is first i get a 29 or thirty and don't see any id on the quarter or dime. when i turn it so the dime is first i see anywhere from 70 to 85 but don't see the nickle at all. I get somewhat better results taking the coins off the cardboard and laying them on the ground, where they are not exactly flat, but it is still inconsistent. Well I guess I should quit playing with coins on cardboard and go the the field and see what happens or send it in to have it checked out. Thanks for all your comments. Randy

try a faster swing, i'm used to minelabs and a slow and low attitude, the faster swing sure makes a diference

My results..

10" best I could judge the swing..
DE Mode
Sensitivity 80

Got a response on all 4 targets 10,5,25,01 American coins..all beeped, ID jumpy just like it should be it could not lock on coins because it saw new target every three inches..

What I did not get was a complete accurate ID on all the targets..I got 4 beeps
I did get ID on first coin Right to Left swing..and the last coin right to left swing till I hit the second coin.....Faster I swung it the better ID was on first and last coin..
Checked at 2" , 4", 6" 8" 10"

At two no problem with coins beeping no real ID..Jumped around due to fast response of ID
At four no problem first coin and last coin
At six same as above
At 8 Id on penny first coin left to right nickle id flashed, Quarter dead on last sweep of coil machine locked on last coin Quarter at 92
At 10...got 4 beeps, but no real ID meter flashed numbers but I got Good Sound...4 beeps
The coil saw 4 coins spaced 3 inches apart as one target on the ID............Locked on last coin, quarter and ID at 88 at approximate 10" high swing

What I could do....I could slow down my swing and ID every coin at 4 6 8 inches.. at 10" ID jumped around and seemed to be trying to ID one target.
Slowed down and got good quarter read, good nickle read bad .10 and .01 cent readings..lower numbers on ID..but the machine did isolate every coin and gave a good repeatable beep on all 4 targets...If I wiggled over all targets I managed to get very close to ID readings that are assigned on the meter on all coins..So T2 did id and did separate targets..Not on one sweep but on slow down sweep. .I believe this is to be as it should be.. I would have dug all targets
I went over by listening and reading the Id's.. What your trying to do is Id 4 different targets all at once on one swing..It is near impossible..But you will get audio on all 4 targets..Reread your manual and see how it stresses that F75 and or T2 audio and Id are independent of each other allowing each to do it's own thing to full capacity....It does separate the coins from each other, and if you had trash that nulled it would have sounded off briefly on the target with flashing ID on meter... I think your asking the F75 to do what it can't possibly do because it beeps and ID's so fast on a regular swing it could not lock on anything..But it will beep if working properly..

In my previous posts I think I was using the wrong word. When I was saying signal I meant sound or beep. I did my test again and when I get above 2" i do not get any sound in one direction and i get a slight blip coming back the other direction some of the time no matter what speed i sweep the coil. if i go slow at 2" i can hear the beeps for the different coins in both directions, but above 2" no sound at all in one direction and sometimes no sound at all coming back the other direction but most of the time a short blip coming back. The Id on the screen doesn't bother me but if i can't hear any sound sweeping across 3 coins above 2" then it just doesn't give me much confidence that it is working properly. In all metal it gives good sound both directions all the time. I called First Texas at about closing time on Friday and talked someone but they said I would have to talk to Daniel on Monday. So i will call Monday and see what he says. Thanks for taking the time to look into this. I am going to an old homesite in the Morning and see what happens. Thanks Randy

It's just my opinion but you either have De mode problems or coil issue...That is not unheard of on the F75's.. some coils have been a little off.Look an see if all the pins are in the coil connector..

PS Take another detector tomorrow...just in case..I truly believe you have a problem with your F75..Don't worry Daniel will assign you a number..Ship it in and it will come back completely tuned to perfection...In fact it will be better than if it was working well out of the box...The techs check everything and + all to perfection..

Well I talked to Daniel at First Texas and explained what was going on and what all I had tried and he was very nice and knowledgeable. He suggested I send it in to be checked out and then I talked to Felix and got all the info on how to send it in. They were both extremely nice and helpful. It is good to deal with nice folks.
