Hi; i am just getting info on doing beach or park detecting...dropped coins, lost jewelery...i wont be going into rivers or looking for the next big gold strike. a dealer was telling me about the SST, but couldn't find much on the Internet other than it is made for California soil. are there classes or groups on beach detecting? i am in the San Fernando valley/Santa Clarita valley...thanks

A great detector that will do both is the whites M6.This machine has a beach mode that actually works on wet salt sand effectively and is a great land detector in any situation. There is a big range of coils for the M6,it is very simple to use,not overley expensive and has performance that competes with most top machines. In it's price range it just can't be beaten for performance and versatility.

an easy to use versatile land to beach machine (as long as you keep the box out of the water from being dunked) is the 6000 Di pro. Or if you have a lot of patience for learning time (to get the knack of tooty-fluty tones/tunes) you can get an Explorer II, which is very versatile on both parks and wet-salt beaches.

Explorer II works great on the salt water/sand and I would recommend it...heck, I own one.

A quick bit of info....
VLF detectors are great for stable soils and fresh water areas. Also, most of them have discrimination features so you can tune them to avoid digging junk.
MF-VLF are multifrequency detectors that usually compensate for salt and highly mineralized soils. This prevents the detector from falsing. Also, most of them have discrimination features so you can tune them to avoid digging junk.
PI or pulse induction detectors use a unique technology that is nearly impervious to the effects of salt water and mineralization; however, most models lack the ability to effectively discriminate.

Wow! ! ! I'm primarily a park, sports park, dry Sand beach hunter with a little vacant lot and median strips thrown in just for kicks. I have used every detector fro an Ace 250 to a Minelab CTX 3030.

My go to detector for all of the above is the Garrett AT PRO. I cannot believe no one has recommended it. To me it is the best detector for the average detectorist available on the market today. Sure, there are higher priced detectors that offer some bells and whistles not available on the Pro. These detectors require a lot of knowledge, have steep learning curves and are not right for the average detectorist. Why listen to me? Good question. I only have about 2000 hours on the AT PRO. I ALSO OWN AND USE FOR SPECIFIC THINGS, a Whites MXT, DFX, Minelab CTX 3030, Excalibur ll 1000, Gold Bug ll and an Ace 250.

The At Pro is the detector I use for parks, sports parks, vacant lots, median strips if I'm coin and jewelry hunting. Proof is in the pudding. I have rolled over $3500 wort of coins in the past few years using the AT Pro, found over a hundred silver and gold rings, numerous silver coins and tokens. That is why I use the pro

Most of all the AT pro is dependable, easy on batteries, simple to learn, supported with numerous how to videos by Garrett on using the tool, and most of all technical support if needed is exceptional. I rest my case.

The AT Pro is a good machine, but has mixed reviews in salt water environments since it is a single VLF detector. It performs well on some beaches, but poorly on others. It all depends on the beach you are hunting.

The adjustability and depth of the Minelab FBS's are hard to beat. My recommendation, except a beginner to MDing, is an E-trac. If you just settle because of the dollar, I understand but I found after owning 12 units over 40 years that you get the very best as soon as possible. Since I became a Minelab user,my finds in worked out areas went up.I recommend revisiting old hammered places all over again with these MD's.. Just my two flying eagle cents...
