New To Detecting! Classic IDX help!

New member
Hello all, I am new to this hobby and eager to start! I recently purchased a used Whites Classic IDX and I am not sure that the metal identifier function is working properly. It seems to be stuck on iron or silver. I tested it with pre war wheat pennies and gold jewlery and it still says iron. The all metal switch was broken so it was removed could this be a possible issue for it not functioning? Any help or insight into the problem would be much appreciated. Thanks!

If the switch was removed and not replaced, they probable hooked the wires up so its working in Pinpoint (all metal) and not in discriminate. It needs the switch to work properly. The switch is only $7.95 from White's and only has 3 wires that need to be soldered on.

Alright, that will be the first thing to do. When i bought the detector, the switch was there, but the toggle had broken off so i removed the switch. Anyways, i will have to purchase the switch and see if thats the fix.

I've had come computer glitches and been busy with a down website so I've sort of 'fallen off the screen' with White's Forum posts. The Classic series in general were/are some of the best detectors White's has ever made. I'm a bit biased, but not alone on that opinion.

I enjoyed my Classic ID and the IDX which was the next model to follow in that series. I prefer the IDX Pro simply because it has the matte-finish decal below the TID display so it eliminates the sun glare. Once the toggle switch is replaced, and if the internal GB trimmer is properly adjusted, you'll find the IDX to be a very good performer for a wide-range of hunting needs.

The stock 950 coil (presuming that's what you have) is fine for hunting more open, sparse-target sites such as a beach, sports field, plowed field, etc., but I usually keep a 6

The detector's ID works in both modes so the broken switch shouldn't effect the ID function. You don't want the bare wire to connect to the metal of the rod.

The ground adjustment can effect the ID a little bit. If you have blocks on the ID and the rest of the detector is functioning properly than the trimmers for the ID are out of adjustment.
