Hi, I am new to this forum although I have been checking it every now and then for info on my Sov GT. I have only been out twice with the GT and I am understanding this love/hate relationship you guys all seems to talk about. Some of the sounds it makes can be confusing at times, and sometimes it seems to have a strong hit on a target, then after trying to locate the target the sound goes away. I hunt the beaches of S NJ, any and all tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

try running your sens at 3:00 and your coil volume at 2:30 no disq if hunting in all metal fixed ground balance and listen for low tones round and clean that is how the gold rings sound, if targets are few try the pinpont mode swing slow and you will get rings at 11" deep maybe 12" even with the 10" coil

Hi RFK,

I noticed when I open up a hole and then re-check I loose targets too. What I do is dig several more scoops of dirt and usually end up with my find. The GT hates open ground. (I really need to invest in a pinpointer too) I bought a Sun Ray DTI II meter (which they no longer make) to help me as I have hearing loss and makes a big difference in learning the machine. Stay with the machine and learn the tones. I have only had my GT for about 6 months and went from GT diapers to GT big boy pullups lol I still have much to learn but feel I have built a good solid foundation in this short amount of time. It is a fun detector and with much patients it will bring many "goodies" to the surface. Best of luck in finding treasures and look forward to your finds / posts. - Jim

I noticed that open air tests seem off compared to the depth I get in the sand. I thought about digging a few more scoops but I guess I was frustrated! Thanks for the tip.

Forget air tests as I feel it is not an accurate indicator of performance. Yes, always take a few extra scoops if you loose the signal - sometimes the object (usually coins in my case) get shuffled in the hole and the detector doesn't pick them up. If you heard a good signal, it is there - just have to get it out of the hole. I use my 8" tornado with sensitivity around 3pm. Sometimes around 1pm if the ground is cleaner. A suggestion: Start in AUTO and get use to the machine first (That is what I did all summer) I am now just getting my "feet wet" with using manual sensitivity.
You will find at times that AUTO works best and then find times where auto just doesn't cut it and manual will outshine auto. Take it slow, learn the machine and you will do fine.

My usual settings:

Iron mask ON
slight threshold
Disc & Notch always at ZERO
target volume at full blast and adjust the volume on my sun ray pro gold headphones.
Most of the time I pinpoint in disc but sometimes I have trouble locating so I flip to all-metal pinpoint mode. That usually fixes the problem.

Since you work beaches - there are many beach professionals that use different settings such as like what Gunnar pointed out " all metal pinpoint mode" or all-metal "track" then flick to "fix"

Hang on, more people will chime in and give suggestions - I am mainly an inland hunter. HH - Jim

pratice makes perfect......when i go to the beach i run my settings right about where you are running them and i have good results......usually on the beach you want to run the sensetivity as high as possible with out falsing....falsing is when you get a signal but it wont repeat on the same spot....or call it chatter... if you get a repeating signal on the same spot then there is something there....... a good tip for beach hunting is; when you get a signal and decide to dig it 1st scrape away the top 2inches and rescan the target area..... i find that diamond pendant earrings and the like will only sound off if you are right on top of them ....if you dig too deep on the first try quiet often you will lose the signal and not be able to find it again.... if its a coin or the like it will give as good or better signal on the 2nd sweep.....best at this point to rescan after each full scoop till you get it out of the hole.....if you dig a super deep hole and the target just disappears chances are it could still bea little deeper....pull a few more scoops out ..rescan...at this point i either find the taget or fill the hole and move on to the next......

I thought pinpoint only worked in all metal mode?

Thanks for the info. I will have to try to scoop just 2 inches off first like you said, it makes a lot of sense. I tend to get excited whenever I hear a signal that I just dive right in with my 6" monster scoop. A lot of times while I am digging I put an order in for Wonton soup since I am so far down!

Yes, you have to be in all-metal to use it.... but you can keep the TRACK / FIX / P/POINT switch in the P/POINT position and then when you have a target that you really can't pinpoint in disc you can flip up into all - metal and pinpoint the object in question. Hope this helps. - Jim

I tried what you said and only dug a couple inches on first scoop and I have to thank you because it really does help a lot, and a feww of my targets were in that first scoop! On one of my targets however I got so deep, when I put my foot on the scoop to push it in my knee was level with the rim of the hole!! I gave up on that one!
