new things I found today in my backyard

I believe the first thing is a oil cap off an old tractor or engine. The holes with the stuff behind them were to let the crankcase breath and the stuff was like filter to keep junk out.

My 49 Ford I had and my 52 used that style breather cap for where you put the oil and acted as the crankcase ventilation (before PVC valves)

The button with the eagle is a Great Seal Button, introduced in 1902.

This is an Army button used by all ranks from private to Lieutenant General (except for the Engineer Corps.), bronze for service and gilt for dress. The book by Alphaeus H. Albert, "Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons, Bicentennial Edition", doesn't appear to have an exact match shown, but some are very close (page 42). The book states that their are many slight variations however, so obviously not every example is shown.

Nice finds.

On Wensday when they are open I am going to take the button to the historical society which is 2 blocks from my house and see if they would like it for their display.

I took the button to the historical society and they said they might be interested in it if I cleaned it up a bit, does anyone know how I can do that? I saw the same button on a cap they had there.

Is it possible that that thing is a muffler for a lawnmower? That was my first instinct. The button looks like the one I used in 1980. I don't think there is much age to it but I could be wrong. Keep digging!!

I looked up the waterbury button company on here and they said that if the back say's "waterbury button co." like mine does it is an older one but if the back says "waterbury button co's" it is a newer one, that extra " 's " makes the difference.

I'll have to go with the lawn mower muffler.

That's a real nice button.

Congrats.
