has anyone tried detecting the soft sand part of new smyrna beach? four of us are going up this saturday.

Hi All,

I was just at New Smyrna last Saturday the 6th and I was actually detecting what there was of the dry or soft sand. Didn't find much of anything to squeel about. I was actually north of Breakers. Not too many people in the water. I will be testing the Detector Pro Pirate again and will probably be at either New Smyrna or Daytona this weekend.... Oh and just so you know....you can check out the beach prior to going if you go to Volusia.org and view the live Beach Cams. It's pretty cool!

New Smyrna is starting to slow down this time of year. Look for the crowds and detect there. Better yet, go up to Daytona Beach at the band shell. It is a night spot. People get drinking and go out on the beach. It is probably the best place to detect. Get there at sunrise. I know of some big gold found there. I wouldn't have told you about my hot spot, but I don't live there any more.

What's the deal with detecting beaches in Florida during off peak months? Specifically late January, early February. I am thinking about the Daytona (from about St Augustine to Titusville) area just before the Nascar race. I am guessing that the beaches will be much less crowded so they will not be replenished with good finds as often but will there be loot to be found? Thinking vacation will be about 5 days of beach/detecting and 5 days of non metal detecting activities.

How many other detectorists could I expect to meet on Daytona Beach on a normal day?

I do not have a waterproof detector so I will be limited to top of the wet sand and dry sand.

I expect to hunt from sunrise to about noon and later afternoon to sunset if possible. I could get a head mounted lamp and go til later in the night too I suppose.

All help greatly appreciated.

Chris
