New Silver Umax settings ...

If you want to descriminate and NOT hear even a squeak when discriminating a Nickel , how far past "Nickel " do you have to turn your dial and where do you have your sensitivity when you do ? ....I am going past "Tabs" and still have a stutter after passing over a Nickel laying on the ground in Disc mode ....I don't think that this is right is it ? .....Thanks, Jim

The pot can be mispositioned with regard ti the association of the labels.

The Ground balance can be quite a bit 'off' .

The newer models just don't reject as 'cleanly" as earlier models, to be sure.

The target coin could be too close to the coil causing some over-load or back-reading problems, or too far from the coil and beyond an efficient discriminate range (insufficient signal to process properly, or the conditions present (maybe tested in a challenging ground environment) can cause a target to respond or appear more conductive than a "bench-test" condition.

Hi Monte,
Thanks for your reply .... I think that the positioning of the pot in the case are OK , but ether the fine adjustments inside ( trim pots) are off or something ? .... I know there's a thread somewhere that shows the trim pots inside the case, but I can't find it ...... The "Sensitivity knob is in the right position ...I really have to go pretty far past the "TABS" position marked on the case to stop the chatter when passing the Nickel across the coil ....I'm guessing that maybe I have my sensitivity too high for checking this also ..... I"m finding targets, but the discrimination has a lot to be desired ... I thought that I should not hear Nickels by just barely passing the "Nickels" marking on the case .....??????.....I got the unit for my brother , and have been trying to show him how to work it , and it's not coming together with the discrim not working properly ....This is our first Tesoro .....Maybe I'll give them a call .....Thanks again , Jim

I can't leave anything alone. But I'm not totally dense & I marked the factory position so I could go back. The single pot is tiny & a little turn does a lot. I found after the adjustment my disc settings were more accurate.

You could get more depth(like you need it with this one) by bumping it up.But the disc settings started to go off mark. I was trying to adjust for the 10x12 coil. I ended up backing off the adjustor just a hair-I mean 2-5 degrees or so. I have a lot of hot rocks in the soil here & was going a bit nuts.Frankly I like the stock coil fine for most use & will save the big one for after I "clean a place out", Hopefully I'll start finding older stuff then.

It's almost silent now till you get to something worth digging. Then it dang near screams. The key for me was learning the language of the single tone. The good stuff tends to have solid tones Vs a short chop or broken tone.

I'm guessin in less mineralized soil the factory setting allows for better depth.

I brought the Sensitivity down to about 7 or so , and passed a Nickel at about 3 inches from the coil and did not hear anything .....Go to 2 inches from the coil and I get a "stutter" .....Going to the right of the "Nickel" markings , and Sensitivity any higher than 7 , and you get a "stutter " from the machine ......I guess I will have to live with it ....Jim

The clicking and 'stutter' is the sound of a rejected target. Since the Silver

Hi Hombre

I only find the "stuttering or clicking " when the Nickel is regected ....I don't noitice it on Iron, nor do I notice it with the other coins ...Nickels seem to really make a clicking noise ... Such is life .....Thanks for your reply ....Jim
