went to town yesterday. stopped by a vacant lot i had past many times. spent about 1.5-2.0 hrs detecting with new settings that i had acquired from this forum. worked great. nothing old, 1960 nickle. plus 1-QT,1 Rosy, 4 Penny's. i now have a better idea of what to look and listen for. now i can try around my place with a little More confidence. thanks for the help guys. P.S. one thing that helped is that there was not as much trash to deal with.

Another question about settings. Just got a new ATGold after using my Whites spectrum for 15 years, its quite a change,,, For The Better of course. Got permission from my town to Detect around the train depot thats been there since 1877. They are getting ready to remodel and I offered to maybe find some relics to display in the new Depot. Well I read my manual and set out for a day of digging. Naturally as soon as I turned on the detector, it went crazy. Iron and trash all in the ground. Tried to adjust out some of it but got some high numbers in several spots but each time it was old Railroad spikes and iron plates. Got tired of digging so many spikes. My question is why Did that Iron registar so High , usually 70s 80s. Was about 6-8" down. What can I do to tell the Iron from real treasures? I know Practice Practice Practise

Rusty iron often shows up as something good. I think the iron oxide is more conductive, and it leeches out around the target. No way around it that I know of. I often hit "ghost" targets that turn out to be something totally rusted away. The only way you can tell is the discoloration in the sand or dirt.

Something to try would be to raise the coil while continuing to sweep the area. If you get several inches up from the ground and are still getting a strong signal chances are that it is a large iron or steel object. But being new to the machine it doesn't hurt to dig a few of those signals just to be sure. Sometimes you never know what is in the ground until you dig it.
