New SE user and need some advise

been a lurker here for over 7 months and decided to join. i think i know what you all are going to tell me but do i need to try a different coil other than the slim one on my SE? i just get so much false hits it drives me crazy.
i might even try a standard explorer 2 coil because my buddy would sell it for 60 dolars. that would be a new start i suppose?
just dont want to spend 150 to 200 dollars on a new coil yet.

Welcome to the forum.

I found old coins (silver/wheats) with my slimline coil when I first purchased my machine three years ago, but after joining a few forums and hearing other Explorer SE users complaining about the slimline coils, I ordered an Explorer II/Quattro(1050) coil. What a difference. I immediately noticed more stability and better depth. I did very well with the 1050 coil, but since then I ordered the Pro Coil when it first came out in '08 and am even more impressed with the Pro. The slimline coils are problematic. You've got a great machine there....and, IMHO, if you're not looking to spend more money for a Pro Coil or one of the SEF coils at this time, then definitely get that Explorer II coil from your buddy.

Keep your sensitivity in the low 20's (no higher) to prevent excess signal falsing. And make sure your machine is set to a noise free channel by doing a noise cancel.

Good luck!

Id say Capt has some good advice. I have the slimline i never seemed to have the problems others complained about. However, i dont think there is a comparison to the SEF or Pro coil. I know how you feel about money right now, these are hard times. But i also realized why have one of the best machines and not get the most out of it. I preferred the edge a better coil gave me. Thou the II coil is better... i still think in the long run youd like one of the larger coils... so hold off and maybe you can pick up a used one.

jump ALL over it friend.:clapping: Like it did for Dan....that coil found me a TON of nice stuff the slimline missed....and I mean a TON.

Odds are slim to none. Probably much closer to NONE that you will find a 10 x 12 SEF coil used. Unless a person can't deal with the slightly heavier weight over the pro coil...IMHO there would be no other reason to sell the SEF.

Be careful buying used. Some people sell their coils that are damaged and you cannot see the damage, but after using the coil for a while your machine starts acting up. There you are spent a fraction of what it would have cost you new and now you have to do it all over again at full price. Although buying from a Friend may be different.

never had a problem.

I'm sure there are scammers out there..as there are everywhere...but I would guess 95%++ of the people who sell on this forum would never intentionally sell a coil or machine if they knew it was damaged.

Good point to what you said though...only way to be 100% sure is to buy from someone reputable...or a friend.
