Decided to buy a safari got it 2 weeks ago and have not been able to use it as yet .IT'S 30 below here. But the good news is we are going to Florida for 3 months in couple of days.
I have been reading this forum for the past 3 weeks and must admit the things I am reading are scary.I hope this metal detector is not as hard to use as it seems.I was kinda hoping the preset modes would be good with minor ajustments to the sensitivety and threshold. Ant suggestions would be appreciated for a newbe.

Don't be worried about it being difficult. I got an E-Trac and then traded it for a Safari because of the ease-of-use. It's so easy to create, save and load custom programs, but you don't even need to do that. For the beach, just put it in the coin-jewelry mode and enjoy the finds. Get a copy of the Andy Sabisch's book "MASTERING THE MINELAB QUATTRO" as most of the material applies to the Safari as well. After you have a few hours of hunting under your belt, you'll want to switch from auto-sensitivity to manual to get more depth.

Looking forward to seeing your finds!

I may have scared you by all the trouble I have had. Don't take that to heart. I was going from a plain jane to a more sophisticated machine and was making it harder to learn than it really was. I am doing much better now but health problems have kept me away from getting out much this year. Go for it! Onus

Thanks guys I guess I will trying my safari on the beaches soon.I have owned a GT and did not notice that much difference in tones looking forward to the change.hopefully it will not be overwhelming.I intend to use my new safari on the beaches any tips.Would AM, Relic or COIN Jewelry be best.

The Coin & Jewelry mode works great for the beach !! just do you noise cancel in the beginning and start going. This is my first detector and the sounds are still a little confusing but I have been getting better with it but when I am on the beach I pretty much dig everything which has really helped learn more about the sounds and numbers it puts out. Also on a side note my first day on the beach with it I got a gold ring!!

You must get a sand scoop

You must get a sand scoop

Repeat that a few times and get one....

I bought mine about three months ago after selling my GT. I have no complaints, the machine is very easy to use. "Mastering the Quattro" gives some very good tips on the different set-ups, but as others on this post have stated, it's super easy. I search the beach 100% of the time and the wet sand has absolutely no effect on the stability. I was fortunate enough to make a nice find my third time out which essentially paid for the machine. The ONLY thing I find a little uncomfortable is the grip. After holding it for any extended period of time I seem to get pins and needles in my hand. I wish you the best of success.

I wrapped plastic around my grip and then some painters tape over that so I could do like they do in Nascar and pull a "tear sheet" when the grip covering gets nasty.

I read that someone used the foam grip stuff they use for tennis rackets or bicycles handle bars over it and they said that was more comfortable but I never had an issue with it either way. I just wanted to keep my new machine looking new.

I agree with you regarding the confusion with the tones. I just purchased the SAFARI this last weekend. I was used to either a solid hit sound or a scratchy one. I haven't been able to hit one of my regular spots yet but my apartment playground yielded a few coins. I think it will just take a few trips to get used to the tones. Otherwise, I like the menu and ease of use. Not too hard if you sit down for a few minutes and go over the manual thoroughly.
